Two Cat Sanctuary residents have had "mackerel tabby" coat patterns in which the stripes broke up into spots. Mackerel, a large, dark male who lived here for years, had black stripes along his back that broke up into "dotted lines" on the undersides. Raindrops, a small, pale gray female who came with injuries and didn't recover, had dots that formed recognizable but disconnected lines.
In some cats, the dappled pattern doesn't form stripes at all; the cats look "spotted" like leopards. Domestic cats can still hybridize with some of their wild cat cousins, but results can be dangerous--the kittens are likely to grow up large and aggressive.
