Things from Turkey (Trying something new here)

Turkish coffee...

Calligraphy...

The scenic Bosporus River...
Historic cities like Ephesus...
That handy piece of furniture known as an ottoman...
These pictures came from Morguefile.

I was looking for a photo of the breed of cat known as the Turkish Van, too. "Van" is the name of the lake (and town) where the cats were discovered. They're named for a lake because they seem to enjoy swimming! Nobody had posted a picture of one of these quirky cats (usually white, with longish hair and colored ears and tail) at Morguefile, so here's a link to a web site dedicated to the breed...

Van has been on my mind lately because, in the local newspapers, what's not been about the local elections has been about the earthquakes that have done so much damage in the town of Van. The Web shows whole pages of reports from the BBC alone...

The Red Cross, which of course was founded by Clara Barton of Maryland, has been actively raising funds in Britain. Their worldwide web page doesn't seem to have been updated since the second quake...

One of the local newspapers gets world news from Reuters and keeps printing stories about frostbitten refugees living in tents, wondering how they're going to survive the winter. Despite landscapes that look a bit like Southern California, Turkey gets real winter weather and has already had snow. A version of this story appeared in the last issue of the Kingsport Daily News:
