Does Virginia Need a New State Song? HB833

If enacted, Virginia House Bill #833 would replace "Carry Me Back to Old Virginie" with a new song by Evi Burgin. I can't listen to it, but you can read the full text of the song, and list of other state symbols, here:

For the record, I have no problem with "Carry Me Back to Old Virginie" in its historical context. The slave is not rejecting freedom--he's begging to be taken back to the relatively healthy and prosperous place the family left, as opposed to the more hazardous place they've gone to. People don't seem to recognize what the words of old songs clearly meant. Of course, if the argument is that cotton does not grow in most of Virginia and has never been a great cash crop even in the southeastern corner...

How would I feel about Evi Burgin's song? Depends on the tune. John Denver's hit song was universally recognized as a big improvement over what our neighbors to the west had been singing.
