Edith Bolling Wilson: HJ98

After all that heavy stuff in the House Bills section at lis.virginia.gov, the House Joint Resolutions are a fun read with lots of popular, feel-good proposals to commend or commemorate someone's achievements. Virginia House Joint Resolution #98 is especially enjoyable, consisting of fun facts about the United States' most active First Lady:

You knew the second Mrs. Wilson was our de facto President while Woodrow Wilson was ill, and you probably remember her for the sheep story, but did you know she was a Melungeon from Wytheville? (Maybe it's too early to break this story. The Bollings are Melungeons, but were ruled legally White; Mrs. Wilson may have been only biracial, thus not a suitable story for "Black History Month.")

Of course, Tea Partiers don't like her politics...I think she can be excused on historical grounds.

  1. Fair disclosure: I don't know whether Mrs. Wilson was a descendant of either Vardy Collins or Shepherd Gibson. More details at http://priscillaking.blogspot.com/2012/07/was-edith-bolling-galt-wilson-melungeon.html.
