Whew. I'm sharing this one with a grain of salt. I'm reminding you that President Obama is known to have taken advice from former President Clinton, who is now known to have approved the circulation of outrageous lies that were easily refuted, with the goal of distracting attention from the unpopular truth about things the Clinton Administration was doing.

Is Obama really so attached to being President that he'd try this kind of move?
More to the point, is the United States desperate enough that we'd let it work? Prior to the original Reichstag, Germany was destitute and desperate. The United States has certainly seen better days, but our economic situation is hardly comparable with Germany's as of 1930.
Remember some of those Clinton stories? Remember that long and loopy one about the guard who'd been recruited for his lying skills, and was then allowed to witness a major scandal because he was the most plausible deadpan liar in Arkansas? What about the blatant envy and bigotry that went into the one about how George Stephanopoulos was hired? And don't forget all those lesbian affairs...every time Hillary Rodham Clinton used a chummy expression in a letter, she didn't even need to touch the associate in question, the tabloids used to scream about the lesbian romance going on.
However: Just in case there is any serious plot to stage a riot, which I believe is possible--Barack Obama doesn't seem insane to me, but other people are--circulating this story is the best way to defuse any potential plot. And/or riot. So pass it on.
