Arne Duncan Dances in Denver

Studies have shown that a substantial number of Americans don't know the name of the current U.S. Secretary of Education. To combat this problem, our White House has posted a slideshow showing Education Secretary Arne Duncan, among other things, dancing and shooting hoops with American school children:

After viewing this slideshow, you will be more likely to remember the current Education Secretary's name. You may, however, still need this web site to remind you that for 200 years the United States muddled along without a U.S. Department of Education. In fact, during the years when our federal government had no Department of Education, some studies suggest that our public education system may have been more efficient.

Nobody can deny that our federal government needs some major budget cuts. The Department of Education is a leading candidate for the budgetary axe. However, a mature male teacher who can still lead elementary school classes in "Physical Education" is something many public schools have wanted for a long time.
