Pa Went to Sleep and the Hog Ate Him

A song that passed for "country comedy" when my parents were young had the refrain, "Pa went to sleep and the hog ate him." My parents hadn't memorized the rest of the song, but described it as a story about a shiftless alcoholic farmer who would never be missed.

Hogs will in fact eat humans, given an opportunity, and the victims don't have to be useless alcoholics. Liz Klimas shares a news item that's definitely not funny:

Farmer Terry Garner was only 69 years old--not close to the usual retirement age for farmers, but old enough to have had a stroke or heart attack while tending livestock.

This web site reminds farmers who insist on raising hogs that it's a good idea not to be alone with any carnivore that weighs more than 200 pounds.
