Campaigner Couldn't Believe President Called Her

Eddie Scarry reports on a campaign volunteer who couldn't believe the President for whose reelection she was working had actually called her...but she was "very nice" to what she must have been sure was a prank caller...

Personally, I'm impressed by the "nice" part of this story. I have received so many bait-and-switch nuisance calls from people whose actual work I respected...or rather from recordings of their voices, which, after playing, connected to some clueless telemarketing pest. It's a fairly transparent strategy: most writers would like to get calls from famous writers, public officials, and other celebrities, so people who want something from us try to use these recordings to trick us into a generous mood. It doesn't work with me. It pushes me straight into a hostile mood.

The official position of this web site is that both major parties are frequently corrupt, wrongheaded, and/or behind the times--usually all three. The Old Left has, however, learned something from its years of behind a minority. The further left we go, the higher quality of networking skills we find. That is probably why Obama won.

Conservative readers have much to learn from this election: (1) Next time, don't nominate a Republican whose very own lousy idea was the inspiration for the Democrat incumbent's lousiest idea. And (2) work on being a more effective and sympathetic minority.

Ms. Officially-Nice-Even-To-Pranksters is an inspiration to us all.
