One of the reasons why our European ancestors were so keen to get out of Europe was the tendency of the kings and feudal lords to "protect" animals that threatened the peasants' crops, livestock, or children. The United States came to exist largely in order to reject this kind of oppression. But those who fail to learn from history just keep repeating it...
