Can Schools Ban U.S. Flag T-Shirts?

It's an interesting controversy. Wearing a flag motif on jeans or a T-shirt was disrespectful up to the 1990s, when T-shirts with flag images and patriotic slogans were declared patriotic. More recently the U.S. Flag Code has reinforced the original rule that flag T-shirts aren't cool. The only real penalty for violations of the Flag Code is ridicule...but...

Here's a suggestion for the students: Wear T-shirts in bright red, white, blue, or some combination thereof, instead of T-shirts with flag images.
