What I'll add: Arlen Specter changed his party affiliation during the years when I was working with George Peters on the in-depth studies of news stories we published on audiotape. Although Senator Specter has to be described as a political "moderate," I remember him as having made some excellent points, sometimes classifiable as "liberal" (or even leftist) and sometimes as "conservative." He was one of a kind...but we can hope that other politicians will be inspired to follow his example of thinking for themselves and acting for their constituents.
