Are Birds Leaving Massachusetts...and Not Coming Back?

It's time for some birds to leave Massachusetts, and the rest of the United States, for the winter. In this article, however, Michele Starkey ponders whether and why many birds are leaving Massachusetts permanently.

I find this interesting because, worldwide, many bird species are rebounding from the damage done by DDT and other pesticides. In Virginia and Maryland, every year I see birds in places where I've never seen them before. For years I thought the cardinals at the Cat Sanctuary chased away most other species, except for house wrens and blue jays. Now, although I see them chasing some of the visitors, I see and hear lots of visiting birds.

What reforestation is bringing to my part of the world, urban sprawl seems to be taking away from Boston.
