Web Log for 10.8.26

It's the fifty-year anniversary of the day my parents and siblings and I came back to the house now known as the Cat Sanctuary as full owners, nomads no more. What a joyous occasion that was for me at the time, and how I've enjoyed my home since then.

Funny

Actually, "Mosquito Defense," beginning with "Poison sprays always aggravate outdoor insect problems and are no longer considered as a possible defense," should be a mandatory course in all US schools.

Good News

Actually it's no longer  news, but CHEERS! anyway. Those two did not belong in prison.

Mental Health

I did not know this. My generation heard a lot of misguided blather about how marijuana was the "gateway drug" that was sure to lead to disabling addictions. By and large it didn't. We all knew it didn't. Not every one of my generation intentionally smoked marijuana--many of us did not enjoy the sensation of getting stoned on secondhand smoke, and avoided parties and even work sites where  joints were passed around--but we all thought of it as if anything an obnoxious drug, a nasty smell, triggering coughs and headaches and disagreeable moods rather than "highs." Most of us did not have bipolar mental illness. For people who have bipolar mental illness, Dave Paulides explains, the biochemicals in marijuana can push them down into profound depression and cause suicidal thinking...and bipolar patients tend to be the ones who are intelligent enough to succeed if they attempt suicide. The condition seems to settle down after people are about 30 years old, but sharing a marijuana "high," if you get "high" on that stuff, just might kill one of your 15-to-30-year-old friends.

(Seriously? A pot party is a lame party anyway. Your friends should be getting natural dopamine "highs" from talking, flirting, games, pinatas, maybe doing some kind of task that needs lots of hands, sharing records, sharing food, dancing, even winning silly souvenir prizes for pinning the MAGA hat on Senator Schumer or whatever induces laughter in your friends. If you can't make a party rock with some wholesome combination of music, chocolate, and hand-printing all of everybody's seasonal greeting cards, or similar, you need to upgrade your hospitality skills, your friends list, or both. I don't ask whether any of you Nephews have "experimented" with pot, perhaps unintentionally, as it might be by riding a Greyhound in Florida. That's your business. But I would be mortified if you weren't able to throw a booze-free, drug-free party.)
