Book Review: The Lighthouse

The five Seafaring Girls who were introduced in Memories, reviewed earlier this week, are now middle-aged women. They have not kept their old vow to gather on the island every summer, but this year they're doing it because one of them has just become a widow. One of the grown-up girls is still happily married. The grieving widow was happily married. The other three come home to lay their old friend and neighbor to rest. As they help sort out his things, they learn more about him...They all find themselves going back to the lighthouse where they used to go when they wanted to be alone. The one who's always been a crier is surprised why how much she cries; the one who's not been is surprised to find herself crying in the lighthouse.

This is a novel, not a romance, and I can't say men come off well in it. One of the main characters has hated her husband, for good and sufficient reason, since right after the children were born and is gathering her nerve to demand a divorce. The other two are in quieter phases of middle-aged love, but their men aren't exactly heroic. The man who still seems to be a satisfactory husband isn't much of a Partner for Life; in fact he's a fisherman who is usually out at sea, and he seems to be little more than a sex object when he's at home, though some young men do say they'd like to be seen as just sex objects.  Another husband who wasn't too bad died young. Joel Shields turns out to be a puny male version of Zenia, the Ultimate Worst Friend in The Robber Bride. Everything you want your friends not to do, this type of character does, to everyone who claims the character as a friend. This is sort of the way mature women see men, but at the same time, I repeat, there are good ones. I think having grown up among good ones helped me find and attract good ones, actually. But, taken on average...

That's one reason why we find ourselves turning back to women friends. The other and more important one is that, in real life, men die young.

This novel of friendship may not be a classic of world literature in English, but there's a reason why fans have kept the series going through thirteen full-length novels and a prequel. The characters are believable, relatable, likable, and the island is a delight to read about. The author known as Jessie Newton and by various other pen names, one for each genre, pulls her 175 e-books together into the category of Feel Good Fiction, even if part of the good feeling seems to be a sense of the general superiority of women.

Book Review: Memories of 'Friendship Inn

Title: Memories of Friendship Inn

Author: Jessie Newton

Quote: "She wanted to make something of her life, and she knew it wouldn't happen here in Five Island Cove."

In a group of five small islands near Nantucket, five girls have grown up together. They're out of high school and moving off in different directions. The story opens with an adventure as the girls row across the channel to another island, get stuck there in a storm, and stay in a hotel where one of them sneaks out with a boy, as is her habit. Boys are Ava Jane's antidepressant of choice. None of these girls thinks she's "n love" or has made much room for "love" in her plans, which seems improbable; real girls resolve to be that way, in small insular communities where all the young people at least feel like cousins, but in real life you'd think some of them would have gone to the mainland and Got Ideas. The plot then continues through a few more scenes showing each girl as the immature form of one of the characters in Jessie Newton's thirteen-volume (so far) series about these women as adults.  

There's a "sneak peek" forward into the series about them as adults. Yes, men and even children will be part of their adult lives, though the series seems to be more about their friendship--at least one of the women is already a widow when, thirty years later, the adventures of the children's club pick up again. 

This longish short story is most likely to appeal to people who are or want to be closely acquainted with these characters as adults. It is mostly an introduction and, after the teenagers get back home, it drags a bit. If you want to share the author's four imaginary friends and watch them coping with the addictions and emotional problems they're already forming as kids, this book is for you.

Book Review: A Fatal Folio

Title: A Fatal Folio

Lex's employers, a publishing company, regretfully let her go because serious nonfiction isn't selling as well as bogus celebrity memoirs. Her friends and family don't want to encourage her dream of running a small unprofitable bookstore. So she goes to work in someone else's small unprofitable bookstore. The store handles rare, valuable, and occult material--the kind of books one can imagine would even contain a spell that might kill someone if spoken aloud. When a customer who handles such books is murdered, Lex feels obliged to solve the mystery. She tried reading a few lines aloud to see what language they were in...

It goes with the territory: Lexi will solve the mystery. By the end of the series the author vacillated between calling "Witching Place" or "Curious Bookstore," no doubt she'll own the store and be married to one of her new friends in the New England village of Incanton. Readers will enjoy the cozy mystery and quirky New England village atmosphere, all along the way. It's not a realistic story about our world. It's a fantasy world, funnier than ours, and more entertaining.

If you like cozy mysteries with bookstores and hints of black magic, this series is for you.

Book Review: A Lighthouse Cafe Christmas

This month's book selections will not allow a full month of Christmas books, but I'll try to post as many Christmas book reviews as possible.

It's a clean small-town romance, so that's all you really need to know. He never was able to tell her why he walked away. She assumed there was another woman. All will be forgiven when he tells her the real reason.  There are a few other characters and subplots that tie this story in with a series of other romances set in the same small town.

Some books have to be the average. I rate this one of the average books. Nothing stands out as a particular delight but, if you want to read a sweet love story set at Christmas in an East Coast town that gets snow, you'll enjoy it.

Butterfly of the Week: Zebra Swallowtail

This week we consider the official State butterfly emblem of Tennessee, the Zebra Swallowtail. Unlike the South American Kites, so many of which are so little known, a great deal has been learned about the Zebra Swallowtail. Much of the information available has been learned in my lifetime. In fact one reason why the Zebra remains my favorite butterfly, to the extent that I have one, is that it serves as a reminder to scientists to be cautious about thinking they know more than they do. Basically everything I learned about this butterfly in college has turned out to be wrong.

Antennae are brown to amber. Wings are vividly striped, making the Zebra hard to ignore, but the stripes vary, as does the size of the butterfly. Hind wings always have tails, often very long tails, when the butterflies first eclose, though one or both tails may be lost later. The proboscis, the long hair-thin hollow tube that is a butterfly's tongue, is long in proportion to the butterfly's head but still much shorter than some Swallowtail butterflies' probosces are.

The Zebra was my favorite species because, among the early spring butterflies I watched, it seemed to have the "just right" attitude toward humans, neither pushing itself forward nor hiding but calmly letting itself be watched. If more information about the butterfly had been available to me, I might not have liked it so much. Zebra Swallowtails behave nicely toward humans but they are asocial and do not behave very nicely toward one another.  

Other Swallowtails have gone through a few name changes as scientists decided the genus Papilio was too full and needed splitting up. The Zebra Swallowtail holds a record. It was first named Papilio marcellus n 1779. Since then, people have given it the genus names Boreographium, Eurytides, Graphium, Neographium, Protographium, Iphiclides, Iphidicles, Cosmodesmus, and Protesilaus, and the species and subspecies names ajax, abbottii, annonae, broweri, carolinianus, cubensis, floridensis, lecontei, nigrosuffusa (or nigrosuffusus), pricei, telamonides, tockhorni, and walshi.  

Recent changes in the genus name amount to quibbling. The Kites resemble an Asian family of small long-tailed swallowtails, the genus Graphium. Some scientists thought the Kites belonged in the genus Graphium. More scientists disagreed, and debated whether the Kites might have evolved earlier than the Graphiums overseas (Protographium) or later (Neographium). The position of this web site is that living things have evolved and are still evolving, within the range of what is possible for their genotype--what is called microevolution--and Zebra Swallowtail populations give an especially clear and pretty example of microevolution, every year, but if mutant individuals in one species have ever evolved into anything more different than a subspecies or race--which would be called macroevolution--nobody has documented it. Trying to guess how one species might have evolved out of another species is unscientific and not a very useful way to pass time. With the species name Boreographium, however, we come to a name change proposed for valid scientific reasons. Boreo means North, and the Zebra Swallowtail is the northernmost of the Kite species. 

Eurytides is a nice descriptive name when read as coming from the Greek words eury eidos, "broad shape," comparing the Zebra Swallowtail's wings with the Zebra Longwing's. It can also be read as "son of Eurytus." Ancient Greek literature records at least three characters called Eurytus. One was a war hero, one a king renowned for his skill in archery, and one was remembered mainly for having a son called Clonus. 

Several characters in Greek literature had names that include the word eury, "broad, wide." It seems to have been understood in the philosophical sense, used in combinations like Euryale, "wide sea," Eurybe, "grand strength," Eurydice , "wide judgment, universal law," Eurymachus, "wide battle," and Eurynome, "broad realm."

Iphiclides means "son of Iphicles" in Greek. It's not used as the name of a character, though Iphicles was Heracles' little brother and people might have been proud to claim him as an ancestor. Iphiclides is the genus name of the Eurasian Scarce Swallowtail, which has white wings with black stripes. Iphidicles at least started out as a misprint. 

Protesilaus was a hero of Greek literature. According to the Iliad, the troops he commanded had been warned that the first man who disembarked at Troy would be killed in the battle. Protesilaus, whose name comes from protos, "first," and Laos, "the people," deliberately chose to go first and be killed as a sacrifice for his men. His father's name was Iphiclus, possibly a descendant of Iphicles, and his name has been preserved as the species name of another Kite Swallowtail.

Cosmodesmus seems to be the Greek words kosmos, "the universe, creation," and desmos, "band, connection," but Google doesn't find it as a character name in ancient literature. It's the sort of name that might have been invented for a character in eighteenth or nineteenth century fiction, but Google doesn't find the reference. 

Some of the species names reflect the tradition of naming Swallowtail species after characters in literature. Marcellus was a popular name in ancient Rome; among the historical characters called Marcellus were some early Christians. 

Ajax was a warrior in the Trojan War story.  His father's name was Telamon, so he was sometimes called Ajax Telamonides in the Iliad. Linnaeus called the Zebra Swallowtail Papilio ajax, and some people have used "Ajax" as this butterfly's English name.

Of the other names given to this butterfly, abbottii, broweri, lecontei, pricei, tockhorni, and walshi all commemorate people; carolinianus, cubensis, and floridensis obviously refer to places where the butterflies were found (though cubensis may have been recorded in error); annonae describes the plant family that includes its food plant, and nigrosuffusa ("suffused with black") describes the autumn brood as distinct from the spring or summer brood. 

The plethora of proposed species names for this species reflects its variability. We shall, if we live so long, meet another North American butterfly whose reaction to temperature produces even greater variation in color patterns, but a majority of individual butterflies conform to either one color pattern or the other. Zebras seem almost as variable as the larger animals for which they're named. Today scientists prefer to remember that, as early as 1973, some scientists were expressing doubts that what are now recognized as the three general ranges of temperature-determined looks ever were separate species. 

The butterfly that left egg on the scientists' faces made news around the world. "Protographium Marcellus" is a band name. Zebra Swallowtails occasionally flutter through pop culture, too; photos and paintings of them are sold as posters, and they are sometimes printed onto various objects at Zazzle (there are about a half-dozen Zebra images at my Zazzle store, PriscillaKnits). 

Basically, individuals that have lived through some freezing weather are smaller and lighter in color, likely to be described as white butterflies with black or brown stripes. Those who have never been cold in their lives are larger and darker, likely to be described as black butterflies with pale green stripes. In between these extremes is a full range of intermediate sizes and colorations. The length of the "swallow tails" also varies according to temperature; longer tails tend to accompany bigger, darker wings. Body hair also varies; bigger individuals can have hair rather than scales all over their hind wings as well as bodies, while smaller ones look sleek and smooth. Males have scent folds on the inside edges of the hind wings, so especially hairy wings may be typical of male butterflies, though my sources didn't discuss gender differences in the hairiness of this species.

In Florida, the seasons, to the extent that the Florida peninsula has seasons, produce a white spring brood, a greenish summer brood, and a black autumn brood every year. Further north, the bigger and darker forms are seldom seen. All Zebra Swallowtails in Virginia look closer to the spring brood in Florida than to the other two broods; nevertheless, their size and color vary enough that they have been believed to be distinct subspecies rather than temperature-related variants. 

Into the 1980s, the three broods observed in Florida were generally thought to be three distinct species, despite a 1973 study that opened questions about this. They are three different generations in the same family lines, but they look like three different species.

Individual variations are visible, not only between our spring, summer, and autumn broods but between siblings whose host trees grew at different altitudes. You can take eggs laid by a big, dark, southern autumn butterfly, put them in the refrigerator or freezer for varying amounts of time before they hatch, and get a range from the smallest/palest to the biggest/darkest butterflies. This clearly shows that the look of Zebra Swallowtails does not qualify as a subspecies difference.

Males and females look pretty much alike, with enough individual variation that the only real way to tell the sex of a Zebra Swallowtail is to observe its behavior. (They recognize each other by scent; humans don't notice their scents.) The hairy patches on the hind wings usually look more conspicuous in males, but are also influenced by temperature.. In some, not all, photos of couples, one butterfly is just noticeably larger and less vividly colored than the other; I found one photo where a pair had been examined under a microscope and the slightly larger and less colorful butterfly, conforming to the usual rule for Swallowtails, was female. Both sexes sip clean water and flower nectar. Zebras who show an interest in polluted water are usually but not always male. Neither is particularly shy; neither is particularly interested in licking sweat from human skin, as composter species often are. They don't seem to mind being watched, but don't fly up in watchers' faces in the threat display some other large butterflies make. Males are more likely to seem "hyperactive" as they flit about in the sun, hoping to meet females. Couples do not always make it obvious which is male and which is female but, after mating, females spend most of their time looking for suitable places to lay eggs.  All butterflies who lay eggs are females but occasionally one finds a female butterfly doing something other than laying eggs..

Zebras can be a challenge to photographers. Like most Swallowtails they tend to flutter their wings even while eating, making it hard to snap a good clear shot. The secret is to persist. Swallowtails are most likely to spread out their wings in cool weather when they are warming themselves in the sun. Clear shots of the underwings are most easily obtained when a butterfly is drinking deep, focussed on sucking up nectar; Swallowtails fan their wings when they start to eat or drink, but may slow down or stop the wing movement when they find something good to the last drop. Because it's hard to get clear photos of them, yet the butterflies are locally common and pretty and popular, every wildlife photographer seems to want to publish a photo of a Zebra Swallowtail. Wikipedia had to thin their collection. Wikimedia Commons has thirty beautiful photos in the category "adult butterfly sipping nectar from a flower" alone.


Observing these behavior patterns, Michael Q. Powell was able to snap a rare, clear portrait of a Zebra Swallowtail's face. Furrier individuals can have long eyelash hairs all the way around the large compound eyes. Lots of photographs of eastern Virginia butterflies can be seen at https://michaelqpowell.com .

Another way to get clear photos of butterflies is to find them near the end of their shot lifespans. They fly for a few weeks, and then some seem to feel tired and sit down on the ground and wait for thir hearts to stop, while others drop suddenly to the ground and lie dead. At all stages of their lives Zebra Swallowtails exist in a symbiotic relationship with their host plant, the pawpaw tree, Asimina triloba. (Georgianature.com mentions that science now recognizes a few different species of pawpaw in the Southern States, and Zebra Swallowtails can live on at least four of those.) If you want to see one or two Zebras three times a year, plant one of these native shrubs. The trees and butterflies find it easiest to thrive in the Southeastern States, fairly close to streams. They are known to live as far north as Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Nebraska, but they're rare in the northern part of their range. The butterflies sometimes stray into Michigan and Ontario but are not believed to breed there.

Zebras have shorter probosces than most Swallowtails, which limits them to feeding on relatively smaller or shallower flowers. Many people mention their taste for white clover. I often see them pollinating violets. Their favorite flowers also include blueberry and blackberry blossoms. The spring generation sometimes fly in time to pollinate redbud trees.

But they especially pollinate the pawpaw flower, which has little appeal to other butterflies. They rarely stray very far from a pawpaw tree.

Generally Zebra Swallowtails like to be the only one of their sex and species in the neighborhood. An adult butterfly's life revolves around producing the next generation of its kind. Zebras like to make sure their next generation will have adequate food--a healthy pawpaw tree, or main limb of one, for every caterpillar. In most places you never see more than two of them together. In places where pawpaw trees are very abundant, however, people have photographed small groups of males sipping water from the same puddles.

Since Zebras don't compete with other butterflies for food, we might expect that they'd be more comfortable with drinking buddies of other species than with other Zebras, and so they seem to be. Though their habits are generally cleaner than Tiger Swallowtails', both sexes in both species sip clear water, sometimes at the same puddles. Zebra Swallowtails seem to have very little social instinct, but do participate in the group flapping behavior Tigers do when the crowd at a puddle is disturbed. (However, when a mob of butterflies rise from their puddle and flap around a larger animal who might be a predator, if a butterfly is bold enough to fly at the intruder's face, it will be a Tiger or a Silver-Spotted Skipper.)


In eastern Virginia, Thisbiolife documented quite a large lek. Were these butterflies all reared in cages and released together? In many species immature males hang out in groups called leks, where they compete and cooperate, evade or fend off predators, and wait to grow up and find mates, together. It's not at all unusual to see Tiger Swallowtails in large leks, but usually one finds either one or two Zebras in a large lek of a more gregarious species such as Tiger Swallowtails or Spring Azures.

Male Zebras are not as positively attracted to nastiness as butterflies of composter species often are, but I have seen them choose, among otherwise equally desirable puddles, a puddle downhill from the dung and carrion that attract the composter species. Females, like other Swallowtails, can usually get their minerals from the males, but occasionally visit polluted water themselves. Both sexes drink fresh water and flower nectar.

Zebra Swallowtails generally have three generations each year, which can be called the spring, summer, and autumn broods. When they breed, as they occasionally do, in the Northern States there may be time for only two broods. In all regions spring butterflies tend to be smaller and lighter than autumn butterflies. Spring butterflies in Pennsylvania have wingspans just over two inches, typically two and a half, while autumn butterflies in Florida have wingspans up to four inches. I think of Zebras as our smallest Swallowtails--in Virginia--but, further south, they can be bigger than our Tiger Swallowtails/ Sources that give a narrower size range are likely to be talking about their local populations.. Wingspans over three and a half inches are normally seen in southern Florida.

Spring butterflies have pupated through the winter, which means they are likely to have survived being frozen solid. They probably don't remember being frozen and don't seem emotionally affected by it, but the experience has affected their growth. They are delicate sprites who don't look as if they'd be able to crossbreed with the big hairy individuals who were their parents. Nevertheless, their offspring will be bigger and darker than they were, and the autumn generation will be bigger and darker than the summer generation. The species microevolves around the range of individual variation for its species within each year. 

According to the photo evidence at Inaturalist, Zebra Swallowtails can mate back to back, side to side, or facing each other around a twig. The back to back position allows one butterfly to enfold the other's wing tips between its own; the side to side position allows them to look to predators like one oversized butterfly. They spend some time together; one photographer was able to snap four clearly focussed photos of one pair from different angles. If a third butterfly is in the neighborhood, it may approach the couple, who seem resolutely to ignore the gawker. 

Mother butterflies look for fresh, tender leaves for their young to eat. They fly around a tree (or a sprout that is trying to become a tree) and check the size and shape before testing leaves with their feet, which seem to have a sense of taste. Meena Haribal and Paul Feeny have identified a specific chemical scent that tells the butterfly which leaves will be ideal for her eggs to hatch on. The larger leaves on mature pawpaw trees can be thick, dry, and tough and contain more of the mildly toxic acetogenins (biochemicals) than the caterpillars need to eat. Zebra Swallowtail caterpillars are well camouflaged and able to evade being seen, but may be least difficult to find on the new leaves at the tips of branches on sprouts hardly taller than humans. 

The infant butterfly hatches from an egg laid on a pawpaw leaf. Eggs look like little round beads, pale green at first, ripening to amber as the caterpillar prepares to emerge. Eggs, caterpillars, and chrysalides are almost always found on the underside of a pawpaw leaf.

The caterpillar's first meal is the shell from which it emerged. Mother butterflies are usually very careful to lay each egg on a separate tree, or at least a separate limb of a mature tree. (Despite triloba being sometimes called "the tall pawpaw," it's hard for me to describe them as tall or large trees. Beside the buckeye, maple, sycamore, willow, and poplar trees that grow nearby, even the taller triloba are small trees.)

Newly hatched caterpillars have mostly black skins with some pale brown stripes and some bristles, and have a humpbacked look that becomes more pronounced as they grow up.

The small group of working eyes, found close to the mouth on the same side of the animal with its feet, don't work very well for long-range vision; Vincent Dethier observed, speaking mainly of moth caterpillars, that all the caterpillars whose vision had been tested seemed to qualify as "legally blind," apparently not seeing further than about a yard ahead. Caterpillars approach and avoid us with such disregard for us as persons because they are not able to see us as persons, and species more curious than Zebra Swallowtails--which tend to stay in one place and concentrate on eating--probably have to crawl about on us in order to satisfy their curiosity about what kind of trees we are. 

Most caterpillars' skins, after the very first one, are green to match the leaves they live on. Some have a mottled grey color produced by black and white crosswise pinstripes. A few are brown. At close range all of these colors can be seen as patterns of fine horizontal stripes. All Zebra Swallowtail caterpillars have yellow-orange osmeteria, very large and colorful in proportion to the size of the caterpillars. They don't merely put out their "stink horns" and smell unappetizing; they may actively rub the osmeterium and the mouth, alternately, against a perceived enemy. 


This photo, also from Butterflies Of America, shows a caterpillar in a state of righteous indignation, probably because a researcher keeps prodding it with straws. To a hungry spider the odor those"stink horns" release may be toxic as well as disgusting. The caterpillars try to touch an attacker with the osmeterium, smearing the rancid odor the osmeterium secretes all over their enemy. During this display they also vomit, smearing undigested plant material full of acetogenins over the enemy. A kind person will not subject a caterpillar to this kind of stress merely for display. It gets rid of most of the ants and spiders that occasionally attack the caterpillars. It seems to be less effective on the wasps and flies that lay their eggs on caterpillars' back ends.  Damman found that the osmeterium is more effective in spring than in late summer.

Acetogenins keep vertebrate animals, like deer or humans, from eating pawpaw leaves; they have emetic properties. Their effect even on contact with smaller animals seems to be even more undesirable. Like most Swallowtail caterpillars, Zebras are harmless to humans because we feel no interest in eating them. 

Zebra Swallowtail caterpillars continue to eat their own shed skins throughout their caterpillar lives, and lack the instinct to avoid eating the skins of their own species if the skins are not their own or are still occupied by a sibling. In nature they almost never see their siblings. If you rear these caterpillars you must prevent their meeting one another. Bigger siblings often pursue and eat smaller siblings when these caterpillars are not isolated. Their host plant could not afford to allow any overpopulation of this species.

Pawpaw trees bear a soft, bland fruit, "Nebraska Bananas," which most people find delicious, but some people have allergy-type reactions to it. Very few animals try to eat any part of the pawpaw tree except the ripe fruit. As with bananas, the fruits can be eaten while their peels have that nice clean look, but are easier to digest when the peels turn black.

In some places, however, a third party may join the symbiotic relationship  Zebras thrive on fresh new pawpaw leaves; late summer caterpillars may be at a disadvantage since the leaves available to them are older and tougher. Sometimes a pyralid (borer) moth caterpillar attacks a tree branch. Its ravages stimulate the tree to put out its reserve leaves, just in time for the Zebra caterpillars to eat the new leaves. This treatment seems as if it would be hard on the trees, but trees can spare a few leaves in late summer, so even this arrangement seems to work for the benefit of all concerned.

As it matures, the caterpillar's humpbacked shape increases to the point where it looks more like its future chrysalis than butterfly caterpillars usually do.

The pupal skin has a dead-leaf look, light green or light tan, The caterpillars pupate on the undersides of pawpaw leaves, where few predators care to look for them. Pupae tend to match the colors of the leaves to which they attach themselves. Autumn chrysalides are often light brown like dead leaves; summer and autumn chrysalides are sometimes green and dark brown like damaged leaves; spring and summer caterpillars usually stay green while pupating. 


Close to the time for eclosion, this butterfly, photographed at Davesgarden.com, can be seen through its chrysalis. Wings and legs will stretch out after eclosion but the tongue is close to its full size and forms a black line down the middle of the body.

Butterfly of Week 1, 1.1.24: Pipevine Swallowtail

Better late than never, Gentle Readers. I can't even blame the time it took to write this study of the popular Pipevine Swallowtail on browser updates, weather-related connection disruptions, and other cybergarbage. There is a lot of good, informative material on the Internet about this species. Research at the level it takes to produce a short article about a more obscure species could easily produce a book about philenor. I sat down to write this post on Thursday evening, and here it is, well past sunset on Friday night.

And the next butterfly on the list is also well known, well documented, and furiously popular. at least in the Western States. But this one's popular in the East as well. 

For at last we've come to a North American butterfly, and a beloved one--Battus (or Papilio) philenor, the Pipevine Swallowtail. If Americans have any interest in butterflies, we probably know this one. To know it is to love it. "Extraordinarily beautiful," science writers enthuse. It's most common in the southern tier of States, but has been seen in southern Canada, is fairly common in Mexico, and is found as far south as Guatemala.

It's easily confused with a few other American swallowtails in much of its range, though--because a few species that are less toxic to birds mimic philenor. As a child I learned to confuse Pipevine Swallowtails, Spicebush Swallowtails, dark female Black Swallowtails, and dark female Tiger Swallowtails, all of which my elders referred to as "black Swallowtails," because their base color is black. Tiger Swallowtails were clearly different. Their affinity for some of the larger "black Swallowtails" could not be ignored; my brother reported that a teacher had told him that Tiger Swallowtails mated with "black Swallowtails" to produce "Royal Swallowtails"--by which they meant the male Black Swallowtail, which has more yellow and less black on its wings than the Pipevine Swallowtail and its mimics. This is the kind of thing that drove the old naturalists to drink and Latin. Common names are useless and misleading, they said. To talk accurately about living creatures we should use Latin names.

So they named this beloved butterfly, originally, Papilio--Latin for "butterfly," Linnaeus having regarded the Swallowtails as the quintessential butterflies--philenor, Greek for "lover of her husband," an ideal rather than the name of a character in ancient literature. Very scientific. Very objective. Butterflies don't form pair bonds, and at least half the species are male.

Then, some years later, after many species of butterflies had been named Papilio something or other, scientists chose different names for genera that might actually be able to hybridize, and arbitrarily named the group that includes philenor after Battus, an ancient king whose name is probably related to our word "battle" and probably meant "warlord," or a shepherd in an ancient cautionary tale who shared the same name. Right. So in Latin this butterfly is the Warlord Who Loves Her Husband. It's not the butterflies who are gender-confused...

In Spanish "Swallowtails" are Mariposas de cola golondrina, and this species are simply azul, the Blue Swallowtails. Some people like to call them Blue Swallowtails in English, too.

All Pipevine Swallowtails eat pipevine, the North and Central American species of (you surely guessed it) Aristolochia, while they are caterpillars. They are most often found in warm forest country where these vines grow, and are occasionally seen almost everywhere. They're not all alike; if you get a good look in a good light you may be able to tell which of a pair is male (his wings are usually a brighter iridescent blue) and even identify the five recognized subspecies. Butterflies of the Pacific Northwest says that "The amount and shade of blue varies with individual, gender, age, angle, and intensity of the light," and describes the shading on the outer underside of the hind wings as "metallic" or "Mylar blue" with "persimmon red," black-rimmed spots. The upper side of the hind wings, when visible, can appear like a flash of bright sky blue, with a border of white spots. The body is black, sometimes with an iridescent blue sheen in males, fading to gray more typically in females. They are one of several butterfly species that can look different depending on the temperature in which they grew up, though philenor don't vary so widely as to have been mistaken for separate species. When Battus philenor philenor survive pupation through a frosty winter in the northern part of their range, according to the University of Kansas' Manual of Kansas Butterflies, they mature with smaller wings and furrier bodies and look more like Battus philenor hirsuta; but the California subspecies look "hirsute" all year. 

In addition to the other Swallowtails in its range, Battus philenor also seems to be a "model" for the Red-Spotted Purple and Diana Fritillary. Far less toxic to birds, they can be mistaken for philenor from a distance and thus discourage birds from eating them too. The blue color delights the human eye but its purpose seems to be to warn birds, "You do not want to eat me."

US-based search engines actively favor US over foreign sites, with amusing results when one is searching for documents about a multinational butterfly species. B.p. philenor, the original and most common subspecies found in Florida and Texas, is abundantly documented online. B.p. hirsuta is well represented. B.p. acauda, usually found in Mexico and Central America, is less documented, and it can be hard to find photo documentation of the subspecies orsua and insularis, native to islands and found in some parts of Mexico. Google seems positively averse to displaying documents of orsua and insularis in Spanish and tries to drag you back to better sponsored documents of B.p. philenor in Texas even when you've typed "battus philenor in mexico" into the search bar.

Subspecies acauda can have quite a distinctive look, with different spots on the underside.

The upper side may be more likely to look black and white , though this subspecies can also flash "cobalt blue" hindwings in the right light.

The species had been recognized and written about even before Linnaeus. The earliest naturalists gave it some of those sprawling, inconsistent Latin names Linnaeus set out to simplify. It was Papilio eques trojanus philenor in 1771, when Linnaeus used that name, which he later shortened. "Butterfly Trojan-Horse Lover-of-her-husband"? "Trojan Horse" might have referred to its confusibility with mimic species.

By the 1890s, when Walter Rothschild wrote his description of this species, he couldn't resist speculating about how the different Battus species had evolved into one another. His ramblings can be found at https://archive.org/details/novitateszoologi13lond/page/509/mode/1up?view=theater. He didn't actually know what might attack these butterflies, but he was full of theories about what :must" now or "must have" once eaten them, to explain the facts that most of them have "swallow tails" but some don't, and most look relatively smooth but some look very furry. He didn't even bother to mention their size range, except to mention that the first generation to fly in spring are smaller than their offspring who fly in summer. (Wingspans can be up to four inches, though three inches is probably more common. Some individuals' wingspans are barely over two inches. However, some South American individuals have reportedly had wingspans up to five inches. In places where they coexist with Tiger Swallowtails they're likely to be described as "smaller and bluer" than the bolder, more familiar female Tigers.)

Rothschild's article mentions, with a nugatory question mark, Reakirt's having classified philenor as a Pachliopta. In fact the mostly South American Battus Swallowtails are similar in many ways to the south Asian Batwings, but their bodies are black, not red. However, though forewings and hindwings move together when they fly, philenor's flitting-and-sipping behavior does show a very limited counterpart to the Pachliopta species' ability to move their fore and hind wings independently; they can keep their forewings moving to maintain balance in the wind while holding their hind wings open to display their social status (see below) to one another. Scientists now describe the similarities among Battus, Pachliopta, Atrophaneura, and other genera by putting them in the "tribe" Troidini, the Aristolochia-eating butterflies.

As with other Battus, the forewings are long and the hindwings can be hidden when the butterfly comes to rest; they can look almost like the Longwing family.

And when do they fly? Rothschild didn't say, but the fact is that at any time of year a Pipevine Swallowtail is probably flying somewhere. There are distinct generation groups during a year in places where the species is active all year. In some parts of Mexico they're found in winter; in the Northern States and Canada they're found in summer. Here's a chart showing when to look for them in your State or province:


More recently, since the butterflies are common in countries that can afford to fund scientific research, many peculiar studies of them have been made. It has been formally determined, for example, that females who are carrying more eggs focus more intensely on finding places to lay eggs and are less choosy about where they lay their eggs than females who have already unloaded some of their eggs are. The eldest caterpillars in one brood thus have to take what they can get in the way of a home, while the younger siblings' homes are likely to be carefully selected. Older siblings may grow up as a family group of a dozen or more, while younger siblings may be solitary.

Another topic of serious scientific study has been the extent to which philenor search visually for the right leaf shape when looking for vines to lay eggs on. It turns out that the butterflies do look for the right leaf shape. In places where they have a choice of different Aristolochiae with longer or wider leaves, a butterfly who has laid her first few eggs on one of the two possible food plants is likely to look for other vines of the same species. However, the final decision is determined by palpating the leaves with her feet, which contain receptors for chemicals the butterflies probably sense as tastes. By walking on a plant a mother butterfly can determine whether it will taste good and be nourishing for her caterpillars when they hatch.

Mark Rausher, who studied butterflies' use of sight to find the kind of plants on which to lay eggs, went on to study the biochemical properties they seem to look for. This study is new enough that you may need to buy it if not reading it at school. (This web site was founded partly for the use of students and has determined, over the years, that a a significant part of our readership does come from schools, as is shown by the decline in readership when schools close. This web site warmly encourages high school readers to nag your school libraries to offer more scientific journals instead of cartoonish video games.)

And some scientists have identified (some of) the biochemicals mother philenor butterflies look for:


Color is a factor in adult butterflies' nectar-seeking preferences; they like pink and purple. They visit white, yellow, and red flowers too, but tend to visit pink and purple ones first. This is primarily a pollinator species, but, as in many Swallowtail species, males drink mineral-heavy, brackish water and females prefer, if they can, to meet their need for dietary minerals by contact with males. Philenor are generally less attracted to dung and carrion than some Swallowtails, but males do like fresh horse and cattle droppings

A study found that Battus philenor normally pupate for either 11 or 12 days, and almost always emerge from the pupal shell at sunrise. 


A study found that the butterflies like to perch, at night, in small uncrowded groups. In addition to this badly formatted study supplied to the Internet by the Smithsonian Institution, this observation has been documented in a Youtube video that I found blurry and hard to watch, despite some nice clear still shots of individual butterflies sleeping motionless, wings spread out to catch the sunlight at sunrise, perched on tall grass and flowers on the prairie.


Sleeping in small uncrowded groups starts in late caterpillar-hood, when individuals often leave their food plants and spend the night somewhere else--where they expect predators won't look for them, no doubt. For caterpillars they can move fairly quickly, tapping their antennae on the surfaces ahead and beside them as an aid to navigation. Caterpillars do have working eyes, not on the sides of their heads where the jaw muscles and camouflage markings are likely to be, but down near their mouths; species tested were found to be very nearsighted, seeing less than a yard ahead. Humans who are so nearsighted are "legally blind," so the resemblance of a caterpillar tapping the path with its antennae to blind people tapping the ground with white canes is not only superficial. Toxic and relative bold though they are, they are vulnerable while resting at night, and awaken with a visible start.

Being so creatively ugly, of course, the caterpillars can give humans a start when the places they choose for resting away from their food plant are humans' homes. This photo of a caterpillar on a narrow window frame makes it look as if the house is being invaded by an alien monster. Actually the caterpillars tend to pupate while they're less than two inches long.

Colors have been chemically analyzed:


Some of the color variations that are possible at all life stages for this species may be hereditary; some are produced by climate conditions; others may be produced by variations in the quality of their diet. 


The social effects of these butterflies' colors have also been studied. (Butterflies are most fertile the first time they mate. Female Swallowtails actively watch males, preferring virgin bridegrooms and watching for fresh young males to mature, since females in many species are fertile when they crack their pupal shells but males have to wait for hours or days to become fertile. Males whose iridescent scales have been deliberately worn down by researchers had a hard time finding mates. The researchers weren't sure whether the females thought the worn-looking males looked too old, looked like a different species, or--a possibility the researchers didn't mention--looked too damaged. When we see a man with a part of his normally visible surface scraped off, do we think "He's handsome" or "He's ugly," "He's old" or "He's young," or do we think "Oh dear, what happened to him?" Too many of these studies are done by guys.)

Young males hang out with other guy-butterflies, showing off and sometimes competing to hold the highest territory on a hill. When they fly toward each other, nobody ever gets hurt; what they're threatening to do is embarrass each other by showing superior size, speed, and skill. (As Walt Kelly observed, a butterfly is an adult caterpillar, and might not want to admit it is completely harmless--but it is, anyway.) They chase each other away from their territories and chase females, too. If a female is interested in a male, the chase was found to last, on average, about half a minute before the couple mated. The benefit of earning a degree in entomology is that you get paid to hang out in places where you can see things like this. The cost is that you actually have to watch and count things like this...


Gatherings of male Swallowtails aren't always territorial displays. Since several species of male Swallowtails like the same mineral salts, they often become the core of a large mixed group of drinking buddies that includes several smaller species as well.

Female Swallowtails visit these groups to check out the males, but males can't always rely on females to start the courtship process. They may spend many minutes flying around females, showing their colors and scents, before getting a favorable response or losing hope of one. They will mate more than once in their short lifetimes, if they can.

In this initially confusing photo from AnimalDiversityWeb, a Pipevine Swallowtail and a Tiger Swallowtail, both apparently old males, seem to be drinking from the same wet sand:


To humans the Pipevine Swallowtail may resemble a female Tiger the Tiger Swallowtail chased when he was younger. Since butterflies recognize each other by scent, the Tiger Swallowtail is unlikely to make that mistake. They're just two old fellows fading away together, the Tiger with half his left hindwing gone. The female Tiger, bigger and more colorful than the Pipevine Swallowtail, cleaner and more polite than her mate, has presumably flitted off into the woods to lay her eggs in the tops of tulip poplar trees.

In many Swallowtail species females are bigger than males. In philenor some photographs of couples show no size difference, and the rule that males have darker black and brighter blue colors doesn't always hold true either. Below, the one with the egg-stuffed body shape is also the one whose wings show more blue.

In fact, one study suggests, male philenor hindwings iridesce more "true" blue before mating and a greener shade of blue after mating. Since butterflies don't form families, males will try to mate again right after their original mate flits off to look for lots of different vines on which to distribute her eggs, but these matings are likely to be less fertile--so females avoid those secondhand males.


Females can look grayish or brownish (as can males, in some lights--it's really hard to tell, except that the ones you see laying eggs are female) but only in a reddish sunset light can they iridesce purple, as in this photo. I suspect Bill Hubick of having used a colored light to enhance this beauty:

Encouraging the appropriate (preferably native) host plants and not spraying "pesticides" outdoors have been found effective in checking local population declines. Butterfly populations come and go, as their microscopic predators follow their population trends, so it may be good for the species overall if the local population shifts from one neighborhood to another every few years. When an overall decline was confirmed in California, conservation efforts seemed to help:


But beware of introducing exotic Aristolochia species. There are some Aristolochias that philenor can't eat. Occasionally a female will lay a few eggs on an exotic vine that will actually be toxic to her caterpillars.


This Aristolochia elegans can become an invasive nuisance in Florida and California. Philenor caterpillars hatched on it will not survive. It's native to Brazil, but Google didn't show any species of Swallowtail butterfly that could eat it. When introduced into Australia it was blamed for killing the Richmond Birdwing butterflies there.


This Aristolochia serpentaria, a.k.a. snakeroot or birthwort, is the primary food plant for Battus philenor in the Eastern States. Its flowers are smaller and harder to find than those of the invasive nuisance species but, if you look closely, they have a similar little burst of dark reddish color inside;


Aristolochia macrophylla, a.k.a. pipevine or Dutchman's Pipe (and most Aristolochias seem to have been sometimes called birthwort), is another food plant for Battus philenor philenor.

Aristolochia or Isotrema tomentosa is another plant some Battus philenor can eat.

These photos were selected for showing both leaves and flowers. In real life Aristolochia vines consist of a lot more leaves than flowers, and people often don't recognize them because, while stepping over vines in the woods, they never notice the flowers. The University of Florida offers more detailed information about the plants these caterpillars can and can't eat. 


When newly eclosed butterflies stretch out their wings for the first time, females contain considerably more aristolochic acid than males. Over the next ten to fourteen days, as they mature, reproduce, age and die, males remain as toxic as ever while females become less toxic. Apparently the female's extra dose of aristolochic acid goes into the eggs. She keeps enough to remain toxic to birds all her life.


Some sources claim that in the Philippine Islands this species is believed to bring bad luck. Well, it would be bad luck if this American butterfly became an invasive nuisance in the Philippines and displaced native Atrophaneuras, some of which are rare and endangered, so that belief might make more sense than many superstitions do.

How do people get these butterflies to perch on their fingers? When the air drops below a certain temperature, all butterflies go into hibernation mode. If gently picked up and carried into a warmer place, they will wake up slowly on your hand, looking as if they were asking themselves what the bleep is going on, but not injuring themselves in a frantic effort to escape. Their instincts tell them to let themselves warm up, quietly, and they'll soon be able to fly away. So they rest calmly on your hand, absorbing warmth, stretching their long legs and tongues, fanning their wings, and giving you time for a photo or video shoot before they fly away. 


Caterpillars don't seem to see far enough ahead to be able to see that a human is a living creature; when they crawl around on us they're probably trying to figure out what can have so many different textures and odors. Butterflies do see us as entire living creatures, but they don't seem to understand the concept. If we grab them or box them in, we're predators and they'll tear themselves to pieces trying to escape from us. If we sit still, some male butterflies may actually think traces of soap and sweat on our skin taste interesting, and may stroll around licking us. (Female butterflies won't be interested unless we happen to be holding something like a juicy melon rind.) If they wake up from hibernation mode to find themselves sitting on our fingers, and we hold still, they'll continue waking up with the semblance of serene faith it seems to require for anything as fragile as a butterfly to live.

It's easy to attract a philenor family to a shady corner of the garden, according to MyGardenerSays.blogspot.com. If unable to transplant a native Aristolochia vine from the woods, you can probably buy A. fimbria as a ground cover from a garden shop. It' has attractive white-veined, pale green leaves and a nice symbiotic relationship with these butterflies. The caterpillars seem to eat it all up. Then it grows back. Then the next generation of caterpillars seem to eat it all up...The blog post goes on to discuss other plants and butterflies that coexist with philenor in the blogger's part of Texas.


Eggs are most often described as orange-red, sometimes orange or amber, and sometimes even burgundy. Like the eggs of other Troidini, they're little round beads textured with drops of aristolochic acid that protect the eggs from being eaten by ants.

Caterpillars are most often black or a dark purplish color fashionistas call aubergine (it literally means eggplant-colored, but is used to refer to a brighter shade than actual eggplants). However, as Birdgal5 documented in this photo (May 2008, Folsom, photo donated to Inaturalist), even young ones can have the minority bright red coloring. Whether caterpillars look black, aubergine, brown, or red may depend on how much light they've been exposed to; since most of them live in the woods, on the undersides of vines, they see relatively little sun and look black.


If, and only if, you eat too much red licorice and want to turn yourself against this candy, click here. I am not agreeing with the blogger's claim. I'm only saying that thinking about it is a good way to form an aversion to red licorice. Or cinnamon "red hots." Or lipstick!


Despite their dragonlike look (and they can chomp, if not hard enough to puncture the skin at least hard enough that you could feel the pinch), these caterpillars are harmless to humans--unless a human, perhaps an infant, was foolish enough to swallow one. Aristolochic acid has been consumed by humans for medical purposes but its effects aren't pleasant. If you weren't looking for relief from something even less pleasant, you'd regret having ingested this plant toxin. It raises pulse and respiration to a degree reported to involve dizziness, nausea, and violent expulsive contractions, as in its old herbal name "birthwort." Modern obstetricians usually prefer other chemicals even to speed up the birth process. Even Klaus Schwab would never recommend that anyone eat zis "bug."


Nelruzam, who photographed this one for Inaturalist.org in Sonoma County in June 2017, might have put the camera too close or chosen to photograph a caterpillar who had already been disturbed. The animal is making its threat display--osmeterium ("stink horns") out, tentacles down. (The other tubercles are just warts, but the tentacles have some voluntary movement.) Caterpillars have been video-recorded tapping each other's tentacles, sometimes apparently waking up a sleeping sibling who jerks away as if nonverbally saying "I'm fine! Leave me alone!" Tentacles down and horns out, however, are thought to suggest to a bird that the caterpillar just might be some sort of bird-eating lizard.

A Pipevine Swallowtail caterpillar, munching away at a pipevine leaf, has been posed next to a Monarch caterpillar, munching away at a milkweed leaf. Though very different the caterpillars are similar in size and have similar tentacles. Both are completely harmless to humans, crops, livestock, and gardens...unless swallowed.

The tentacles, some researchers say, may help the caterpillars find edible leaves:


In natural conditions Monarch caterpillars never grow up in family groups, have no social instincts, and are likely to try to eat one another if they do meet. Several of the larger caterpillars behave this way; it's one way nature keeps them from overpopulating and destroying their host plants. In nature, however, philenor often grow up in small family groups, as butterflies often lay the first few eggs in clusters, and siblings get along very nicely, lined up in rows eating one leaf when they're little, spreading out so each one can gobble a leaf of its own as they grow bigger. In captivity, especially if they don't find good fresh leaves to eat, they become confused and can start to "bite and devour one another." The best way to rear these butterflies is to protect their host plant outdoors and watch them grow up naturally.

Though toxic to most predators, philenor caterpillars have one unusual predator: ladybugs (ladybirds, ladybeetles). Ladybug larvae usually eat aphids but they can survive eating a small, young philenor caterpillar. According to https://mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/field-guide/pipevine-swallowtail-blue-swallowtail, when larvae of these species meet, the beetle larva is likely to bite the caterpillar. The caterpillar can bite back in self-defense, although it's not known to eat beetle larvae. Which creepy-crawly will win the biting fight? Usually the one that is bigger at the time. Mature caterpillars are much bigger than ladybug larvae. Hatchling caterpillars are not.

People have, as Pedromariposa has, made video recordings of the caterpillars stripping leaves off these vines. This is one of the Swallowtail species that have enough sense not to eat their siblings; butterflies try to give each of the younger siblings in the brood a foodplant of its own, but some of the first few eggs may be placed in a group on one plant, producing restless but nonviolent family groups:


People have taken time-lapse photos of how the caterpillar achieves that funny-looking chrysalis...not quite as grotesque as some of the tropical Battus and Atrophaneura chrysalides, but still, it's a weird-looking process. 



Chrysalides are usually pale brown, as in the video. But Tashawidow watched a philenor hirsuta caterpillar develop this bright green and yellow chrysalis in Redding, California, in May 2020:


Spillane found a brown and a green chrysalis side by side in Sausalito in January 2021...these caterpillars made little attempt to seek cover before entering the most vulnerable stage of their lives. (Both photos from Inaturalist.)


After eclosion (emergence from the chrysalis) the butterflies fly for up to two weeks. Art Shapiro, who ought to know, claims that they can live as long as a month after eclosion--but apparently few do, because everyone else says their adult lifespan is two weeks.
