We continue to think about the families and loved ones of our fallen servicemembers in Niger this month. The many questions surrounding their deaths show the urgent need to have a public discussion about the current extent of military operations around the world.
As the United States’ war on terrorism continues to expand, it’s critical for Congress to reassert itself in the debate. Since taking my oath of office, I’ve called on my colleagues to vote on a new authorization for use of military force (AUMF) so Congress can provide a transparent public discussion on matters of war. A new AUMF would send a powerful message of resolve to our enemies, our allies in the fight against terrorism, but most importantly it would show our troops – many who call Virginia home – that we stand behind them in their mission.
It’s well past time for Congress to fulfill our constitutional responsibility. I look forward to discussing this issue next week when the Senate Foreign Relations Committee holds another hearing on my bipartisan AUMF with Senator Jeff Flake.
