As Congress begins its new session, I want to share some of the highlights from the past year and get your input on what you want to see me working on in 2019. Over the past year, we’ve made progress on strengthening Virginia’s economy, combatting the opioid epidemic, and supporting our national defense. I’ve shared a partial list of some of the successes of the past year below. While I’m proud of the progress we’ve made in the past year, I also recognize we’re facing some challenging times as a country. I’m writing you in the midst of a disastrous, pointless government shutdown that has thrown the lives of thousands of Virginians into chaos. I’ve set up a special page on my website with updates on my work to end the shutdown and resources for federal workers and contractors affected by it. I remain committed to ending this unnecessary shutdown and making sure the workers impacted by it are made whole. But right now, I want to hear from you. Warner's newsletter & teletownhalls 2018 Accomplishments The President signed into law several bills I sponsored or co-authored: The Ashanti Alert Act, creating an alert system for missing adults. A bipartisan opioids package that included several bills I authored. Legislation granting federal recognition to six Virginia Indian tribes after hundreds of years An amendment to improve Black Lung screening for coal miners. The Forever GI Bill Housing Payment Fulfillment Act, to reimburse veterans for missed or underpaid housing benefits due to errors at the VA. A bill renaming a Charlottesville post office after the late Capt. Humayun Khan, who was killed in action in Iraq. Legislation reforming the Department of Defense's purchasing process for cybersecurity services. An expansion of the Petersburg National Battlefield. Bipartisan banking reform legislation to help small, community banks and credit unions compete and better serve their customers. A bipartisan Farm Bill that included legislation I sponsored to legalize industrial hemp. That legislation also included a bill I cosponsored to aid domestic violence survivors and their family pets. Bipartisan legislation improving care for Medicare patients with chronic medical conditions. As Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee: Passed crucial re-authorization legislation through the committee supporting the intelligence community and improving Congressional oversight. Introduced legislation to reform our nation’s broken security clearance system. Developed policy proposals to protect Americans and their private data from foreign adversaries and other bad actors on social media. Investigated Russia’s attempts to undermine our democracy, and uncovered new evidence of Russian attempts to target African-American voters and other communities with misinformation and disinformation. Led the call for the establishment of a U.S. Cyber Doctrine. Working with Senator Kaine, we had success on a number of Virginia priorities, including: New investments in military readiness, including $131 million for base construction expenses, new funding for naval shipbuilding, and a raise for the troops. Increased funding for job training programs, rural broadband, college affordability, and Chesapeake Bay cleanup, among other priorities. Water infrastructure legislation that invests in the Port of Virginia and flood-resilience programs. More than $210,000,000 in federal grant funding for Virginia announced by our offices.
