Book Review: Women's Circle Home Cooking October 1982

Title: Women’s Circle Home Cooking, October 1982

Editor: Barbara Hall Pedersen

Publisher: Tower Press

Date: 1982

ISBN: none

Length: 64 pages

Quote: “If you’re searching for perfection, you’re destined to suffer a lot of disappointments.”

The editorial is about pots and pans, the good and bad points of different materials. Still, as the first line of the first article in what was apparently a monthly magazine, this seems like a confession. There are several obvious errors in this magazine. One bread recipe begins with some milk, but does not indicate how much milk.

For cookbook collectors, this is a small magazine, glossy paper and color photos only on the cover, possibly inspired by the success of Workbasket. It contains very few ads, almost all recipes. Recipes seem to have been printed as readers mailed them in. There’s a nice period vibe with recipes for quiche, recipes that call for wheat germ, and (in October!) recipes that use up zucchini, but most of the recipes aren’t particularly trendy. Ingredients are still easy to find in stores.

Short review, short book. If you enjoy testing recipes you’ll enjoy this one.
