Butterfly of the Week: Scarce Hispaniolan Swallowtail

The Scarce Hispaniolan Swallowtail has always been scarce, so it causes less concern than Schaus' Swallowtail's scarcity does. It is still considered scarce enough to be somewhat endangered. It lives in only a few places, including a nature park in the Dominican Republic where it's an attraction. It has been called the Haitian Swallowtail but is known to live in only one, rather vulnerable, field on that side of the island. Relatively little has been written about this species, and many sources still call it Papilio rather than Heraclides.

Aristor or Arestor was the name of two minor characters in ancient Greek literature. If spelled "Aristor" the name can be associated with the word aristos, meaning "best." If spelled "Arestor" it may be connected with Ares, the spirit of War, and translated as "ruler, controller," or "avenger."

For the few butterflies that have been caught and closely examined, females look similar to males, slightly larger and warier. Wingspans are about four inches across. Nothing is known for sure about the early stages. Adult butterflies like to sip nectar from colorful tropical flowers. Wings can fade from black and yellow to brown and tan.

People seem cautious about even photographing this butterfly because they don't want to make it more rare than it already is. For a long time there was only one museum specimen in Europe--and then it was destroyed. INaturalist has other photos..of the same butterfly shown above, pollinating the same flower bush; what I ganked was the clearest image.

Butterfly of the Week: Schaus' Swallowtail

This week's butterfly is considered a success by conservationists, but it still includes one of America's most rare and vulnerable butterfly subspecies. At least, historically it has included...some sources now list Florida's Schaus' Swallowtail as a separate species from the Caribbean islands' Dusky Swallowtail.

Heraclides aristodemus was known by other names before 1911, but has been called Schaus' Swallowtail since Schaus published this description:


Only the subspecies ponceana (sometimes ponceanus), among the other subspecies of Heraclides aristodemus, was considered critically endangered, though all of these large butterflies are somewhat vulnerable. Some scientists argued that ponceana was distinctive enough that it ought to be considered a separate species; most have not agreed with this claim. 

(Why is it either ponceana or ponceanus, but always and only aristodemus? Because Aristodemus, or Aristodemos, was an individual man's name--a soldier in the Iliad, one of those literary characters from whom older names for Swallowtails came. Ponceana or ponceanus refers to a place, though the place would have been named after Ponce de Leon and the traditional rule didn't say that all characters had to come from fiction; some others came from history.)


Some more notes on the namesakes of other Swallowtails:


Due to different sources' listing this species as Papilio aristodemus ponceanus, Heraclides aristodemus ponceana, or Heraclides ponceana, information about it--though abundant--is scattered around the Internet in a tedious and time-consuming way.

In flight it seems easy to confuse with other Heraclides--another very large Swallowtail, with fairly long tails, black or dark brown with yellow stripes above, yellow with black stripes and spots below. 

This butterfly's habits are adapted to survive in groves. Its flight is typically high and erratic; it likes to lay eggs high in the trees, on new leaves. Schaus' Swallowtails can fly more than five miles across water, between Keys. They can also fly around tree branches and spiderwebs. They are not great composters; males are likely to amuse themselves by claiming a territory, often a tree about ten feet above the ground, and patrolling it rather than joining male drinking buddies at a puddle. (They do, of course, drink both fresh and salt water, but the males don't spend their days sipping salt water, as many Swallowtails do.) They usually avoid places that are subject to flooding. 

They are even said to be able to stop in mid-air and fly backwards to confuse birds. This web site, without questioning the honor or the sobriety of people who claim to have observed this, does point out that most butterflies have been blown backwards by gusts of wind.

Some sources, such as Butterflies of America, accept the US-centric proposed reclassification of this species with H. ponceana ponceana (also called H.a. ponceana) as the nominate subspecies, and the other subspecies listed as H.p. bjorndalei, H.p. majasi, and H.p. latefasciatus

Subspecies majasi is found in the Bahamas, and bjorndalei in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The name majasi was coined to commemorate Mark J. Simon, since simoni was in use as a scientific name commemorating someone else, according to this paper identifying majasi as a distinct subspecies.


Heraclides aristodemus ponceana normally lives in what are called hammocks or hummocks--groves of tropical hardwood trees. It is not normally a pest on citrus fruit trees, though it can be confused with some of the other Heraclides butterflies that can become pests. Its favorite host tree is called torchwood. It can eat another native tree called wild lime (or cat-claw, or shake-hand, from its prickly bark), and will eat citrus leaves and fruit if offered them, but its instincts and habits lead it to live in dense groves of wild trees rather than well spaced plantings of citrus trees. Populations that have recovered since Hurricane Andrew have had access to torchwood.

In fact, the IUCN Data Book points out, torchwood and wild lime are relatively small trees that normally grow at the edges of groves of bigger trees. These trees, and the flowering bushes the butterflies like, appear after fires clear out space among the big trees. Probably these butterflies are adapted specifically to pollinate new growth after natural fires. 

Though it is one of the "giant" swallowtail family, Schaus' Swallowtail is not all that gigantic. With an average wingspread of 3.5 inches, its size is in between the Tiger Swallowtail or Monarch, and Florida's native Giant Swallowtail, H. cresphontes; its coloring fits the same general pattern as cresphontes and it has been called cresphontinus. Some individual H. cresphontes' wingspread is over 5 inches. However, Swallowtails are variable, and big aristodemus and small cresphontes can look almost alike from a distance. Only in 1911 did William Schaus prove that Schaus' Swallowtail was a different species and not an undersized subspecies of cresphontes

From a distance, it might even look like H. andraemon, which can live in the same habitat.


Florida's habit of spraying poison into the air, in a rather touching and pathetic attempt to control mosquitoes, is thought to have contributed to the near extinction of Schaus' Swallowtail. The butterflies are recovering on the Keys because the Keys are not normally sprayed.

Several hundred Schaus's swallowtails could still be seen on regular basis on north Key Largo in 1972, but the species declined dramatically in 1973 when the local mosquito control district began sparying Dibrom and Baytex as mosquito insectices in the keys [1].

Damage done to humans by spraying has never been honestly assessed, though here I stand to testify that it costs Florida tourists. More pleasant (and effective) ways to control mosquitoes involve natural predators, of which many, like birds, frogs, lizards, and dragonflies, have high tourist appeal. Some birds might also eat Schaus' Swallowtail caterpillars, but these big caterpillars make quite a meal for a bird and, if not highly toxic, presumably taste nasty to birds. Nevertheless, presumably to humor those who believe the poison spraying is controlling the mosquito populations--which I did not observe to be the case on Florida's mainland--spraying is still allowed on Key Largo, where resurgent Schaus' Swallowtail populations could expand again, if humans would get out of the way.


Although Schaus' Swallowtails pollinate pretty flowers and their comeback was an interesting science story, Floridians can be a bit jaded about their unique wildlife. People were not as enthusiastic as you might think they ought to have been about bringing back these butterflies, despite their commendable tendency to avoid citrus groves.


Climate change could still destroy Schaus' Swallowtail. Actually, major climate change, such as that which could beproduced by putting a big "data center" in Georgia or Florida, could easily destroy Florida


A University of Florida teacher designed a virtual reality game to engage players with the idea of restoring Schaus' Swallowtail populations. So far, the game's popularity lags behind those of role models like Dungeons & Dragons or Pokemon Go, but give it time...


And the butterfly is featured on an "Endangered Pollinators" wall poster.

Chegg uses the five traditional subspecies (Heraclides aristodemus aristodemus, H.a. bjorndalei, H.a. majasi, H.a. ponceana, and H.a. temenes) in a lesson on constructing "dichotomous keys":


(Of these names, bjorndalei seems to commemorate Florida biologist Karen Bjorndal. Temenes probably refers to a legendary King Temenos in Greek literature; as words temenos and temenes referred to the sacred ground dedicated to a Greek god--sometimes a grove. Latefascia means "banded sides" or "striped sides.")

Though Schaus' Swallowtails are big and beautiful, their human-avoidant tendencies may make them less charismatic than Tigers or Zebras. One blogger whined that Schaus' Swallowtails have "boring brown coloration."

Then again, males and females can look very much alike. (The one facing the top of the photo below is probably the female, going by her egg-loaded body shape.)

Bah! Only some of the females achieve subtle brown and gray coloration. Many of these butterflies are gaudy but people just don't get to know them in the up-close-and-personal way most of us in the Eastern States know Eastern Tiger Swallowtails. Schaus' Swallowtails don't seem to crave salt desperately enough to lick humans' arms.

It is occasionally possible to see these butterflies at the Biscayne National Park. Attempting to "collect" them, or harming them in any way, would be a federal offense. Taking pictures is fine. You can also print off a copy of this brochure, or carry one, and report the sighting to the National Park Service. They would probably appreciate a copy of any photo you're able to snap, too.


However, you may notice that some of these links show people working with this species wearing masks and gloves and protective gear. That's not because of COVID. Schaus' Swallowtails live in places that are very friendly to mosquitoes...whose natural predators' populations have been decimated by continual spray poisoning.

Both torchwood and wild lime bear fruit that some humans consider edible, though not likely to compete with oranges, limes, or kumquats. 

Eggs are laid separately, although caterpillars are sometimes said to be gregarious, and mother butterflies don't have to be particular about laying on the tenderest tips of the newest leaves.

The eggs hatch in a week or less. After that the caterpillars develop rather slowly for tropical butterflies, spending on average twelve days in each of their five skins.

Caterpillars can grow up to three inches long. Warty rather than bristly, they seem to be trying to look like the droppings of large sick birds. Possibly because their instincts have adapted to predation by ants, they put out their "stink horns" much more readily than some other Heraclides caterpillars. Their bite is not serious but, apparently on the premise that predators may not know this, they rear up and threaten to bite anything that touches them. For caterpillars they are large, and can chomp. And spit.

Ants' predation on some species of caterpillars has been a "hot topic" recently. Though fire ant attacks are not known to have been a significant factor in the decline of Schaus' Swallowtail, they certainly aren't helping and a focus on ant-versus-caterpillar videos is likely to distract attention from the more serious problem of continual spray poisoning. Bigger, older caterpillars may be able to move away fast enough to survive. Smaller  caterpillars are often surrounded and eaten. Bigger ones can shove ants away with their heads or discourage ants with their osmeteria. A study quantifying how well this works focused on ants' ability to attack Heraclides cresphontes caterpillars, but H. aristodemus caterpillars will round on a nuisance with their long white osmeteria popped out, looking like something no reasonable person the size of an ant would want to meet. Ants are not reasonable persons.The caterpillars probably have to shove the ants off the twigs where they meet.


Pupation can last for most of either one or two years. Most butterflies emerge to fly in the season after they were caterpillars; some wait through another season. Eclosion tends to follow rain, when new leaves grow. Years when this species has two generations tend to be wet years.

The chrysalis looks like a twig, complete with splinters and spots that suggest holes in the wood...and then one day it doesn't. It splits open and releases the butterfly within.


Normally Schaus' Swallowtails eclose in April or May and fly, if they live long enough, until mid-June. In some years a second generation fly in August and September.

Butterfly of the Week: Heraclides Androgeus

This week's butterfly, Heraclides androgeus, flies in South America and some Caribbean islands. It is considered a close "relative" of H. andraemon.  In English it is usually called the Androgeus Swallowtail, sometimes called the Queen Swallowtail. (People who call H. androgeus the Queen call H. thoas the King Swallowtail.) In Mexico it is sometimes called Cometa Banda Amarilla, the Yellow Band Swallowtail. It has two distinct color patterns, male and female, with much variation among individuals. It is easily photographed; photos are abundant on Google...

Photo from Flickr. The female may have a yellow patch on her fore wings, or, like the one shown above, may not. The size and shape of the iridescent blue patch on her hind wings varies. The fore wings may also iridesce blue or green. 

The wingspan can be over five inches and males, as in the couple above, can have wider wingspans than females. The size range overlaps but Lewis's widest-winged specimen was male.

One or two of the points along the scalloped hind wings may be much longer than the others, or all may be short. Some of these butterflies have long "swallow tails," and some have five or six short "tails" on each wing. Swallowtails' "tails" are almost always symmetrical when the wings first unfold, but they are expendable and may be missing from living butterflies.

As in other sexually dimorphic species, "chimeras" with a mix of male and female DNA are occasionally found. In butterflies gender confusion is recognizable when the wings develop in the male pattern on one side and the female pattern on the other.

A population of this species seemed to be colonizing southern Florida in the 1970s; the butterflies became resident nuisances on citrus groves but, depending on how we look at it, the colony failed or was successfully extirpated in the 1980s. 

Because of color variations, many subspecies names have been proposed. Delano Lewis recognized three (androgeus, epidaurus, and laodocus); some online sources also accept reyesorum and iuanalao as consistently recognizable subspecies. 

The three older species names come, as was traditional, from literature. Androgeus was the name of the son of Minos of Crete in the story of the Minotaur, and of a soldier in the Trojan War. Epidaurus was the name of a long-ago town, whose residents said the town was named after a son of Apollo; two modern towns, neither built on the ruins of the ancient one, are also called Epidaurus. Laodocus was the name of several minor characters in Greek literature, most notably a soldier whose form was taken over by the goddess Athena in some stories of the Trojan War.

Iouanalao was the old Arawak name for St Lucia island, and some sources spell the butterfly subspecies name iouanalao. It sounds almost like "iguana land," which is said to be a fair translation. (Google likes to confuse this name with Ouanalao, the old name for St Barts island.) Reyesorum means "of or from Reyes," which could refer to several places in Mexico or to the winter holiday.. 

Heraclides androgeus androgeus is found from Guyana to Brazil, Suriname, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador. It tends to have relatively short tails and obscure spots on its hind wings.

Photo from A. Sourakov, Hispaniola. This is the second instar. Caterpillars keep up the bird dropping camouflage even as they grow too big to look like even goose droppings. They come in different combinations of black and white, taupe and gray, brown and yellow, green and cream, but usually show similar dark-and-light patterns overall.

Andre Alves Thentomologist, whose Flickr post is written in Portuguese so I'm guessing he's posting from Brazil, caught a caterpillar in the act of eating leaves on his tangerine tree. It extended its osmeterium and exuded an odor he described as desagradavel (disagreeable).


In Spanish-speaking countries these caterpillars are called lagarta lengua-de-cobra, Cobra's Tongue Caterpillar, suggesting that they're one of the species that display their osmeteria readily--it's their distinguishing feature.

Males join puddle parties with other butterflies of their own species, or in mixed groups. Sometimes unmated males pass their time by defending a "territory" from other males. The space chosen is not necessarily one females are likely to approach; since butterflies don't hurt each other when they "fight" these males are just trying to boost their status--which may or may not make any difference to females.

Females spend most of their time laying eggs, usually on young leaves of trees in the citrus family. Multiple overlapping generations mean that somewhere one of these butterflies is flying on any day of the year. They are less active during whatever their habitat has in the way of winter.

H.a. epidaurus is found in Mexico and Costa Rica, Trinidad, St Lucia, St Vincent islands (but not Jamaica), sometimes Ecuador, sometimes Venezuela, and it has strayed into Florida and Texas. Males may show even more yellow than those of H.a. androgeus; females usually have smaller spots but may show more iridescence overall.

H.a. iuanalao is considered rare by those who recognize it as even being a subspecies. Its home is Martinique. Photos documenting its difference from other subspecies have yet to be published online.

H.a. laodocus is found in southern Brazil and Argentina. It may be smaller than other subspecies because it's further below the equator; the wingspan for this species ranges from four to six inches, but one page for this subspecies gives its wingspan simply as four inches. Only one female has ever been "collected." She looked similar to female H.a. androgeus. Living females show bright yellow, white, or even pale iridescent green spots on the fore wings.

H.a. reyesorum is found in western Mexico. Males may show more black veins breaking up the ends of the yellow band across the wings.

Females of this subspecies show much less light color, more black or blackish base color, than other subspecies, and more small colored spots on the hind wings than some other subspecies.

No subspecies seems to be threatened. The caterpillars may actually prefer native wild plants to commercially cultivated species.The adults are pollinators, although males also do some composting; both sexes are often photographed among colorful tropical flowers. As with other Heraclides, they are large enough that even one can seem like a pest, but this is less likely to happen when citrus fruit trees are planted in among other kinds of trees so that they don't promote overpopulation.

Butterfly of the Week: Heraclides Andraemon

This week's butterfly is Heraclides andraemon, the Bahaman, or Cuban Swallowtail. It's another "giant," with some resemblance to Florida's resident Giant Swallowtails. Like them, its wingspan is usually about four inches, but individuals measuring over five inches have been found. 

Like them, it can just be gorgeous with no effect on humans, but when humans plant big groves of citrus the butterflies are often tempted to eat citrus leaves and fruit. They don't kill the trees but do ruin any fruit they eat and cause alarm and despondency in citrus growers. At least the caterpillars, though large, don't travel in solid rafts of leaf munchers. They are less likely to become pests when citrus trees are planted among other useful trees that attract different species. This forces each butterfly (or moth or beetle) group to spread out and, inevitably, thin down to sustainable levels.

There are small, consistent differences among three subspecies of this butterfly, as it has evolved in three geographical areas. Each subspecies can therefore claim its own English name. 

Heraclides andraemon andraemon is the Cuban Swallowtail. Andraemon was the name of several different characters in Greek literature. Probably the best known was an Aetolian king, the father of Thoas, a Trojan warrior, in the Iliad. Heraclides thoas is another giant swallowtail species found on Cuba.

These butterflies live in places that don't really have winter; generations can overlap and on any given day of the year, somewhere, one of them is flying. Thus, on the same day, Alex835 found a late-stage caterpillar. It is not showing its osmeterium. Heraclides andraemon caterpillars have a little square white yoke across where their shoulders would be, if they had shoulders. It is permanent and may discourage some predators, although the caterpillars aren't very toxic. They have osmeteria, too. Those who report noticing an odor describe the odor as "rancid."

Like many tropical butterflies, they mature fast, and their host plants also grow fast. However, for reasons unclear, some individuals spend a long time in their pupal shells, increasing generational overlap. Scientists can observe that asynchronous eclosion allows siblings to fly in different seasons and thus increases the chance that some of a given brood will survive and reproduce, but what causes individuals to mature fast or slowly, once they've entered the pupal stage, remains unknown.

Google doesn't like the actual web site for the book announcement linked here. The page linked below gives a checklist of Jamaican butterflies with plenty of Jamaican attitude toward Heraclides andraemon and advertises a full-length field guide. There's a link to the web site associated with the book, but Google refuses to open it.


Jahnikablair didn't even want to say where on the island she'd found the couple shown above. Some Jamaicans would have thought Jahnikablair should have killed them while they were still and vulnerable. Anyway, the photo documents that this species often mates in a sort of "69" position that allows either half of a couple to carry the other half away from a predator, if startled in the act of mating.

If Jamaicans don't welcome this species, they certainly have documented it. At the GBIF site, a full half of its observation records--almost 150 photos--come from Jamaica; more than Cuba, Grand Cayman, and Nassau, where the butterflies are a minor tourist attraction, together.

Heraclides andraemon andraemon is found on the other Cayman and Turks and Caicos islands, but not normally on Grand Cayman, which has its own subspecies. It has sometimes strayed into Florida, usually on the Keys, like H.a. bonhotei.

Heraclides andraemon bonhotei is the Bahaman (Bahamian, Bahama, Bahamas) Swallowtail. It has been known to stray onto the Florida Keys, and is believed occasionally to stray onto the main peninsula of southern Florida. It was named for John Lewis Bonhote, a British naturalist. Though the Bahaman Swallowtail was first described by Emily Mary Bowdler Sharpe, the first woman to publish a paper with the Zoological Society of London, Bonhote was the first to present actual dried and pinned specimens to the Society.

This 1986 report (among other things) compares H.a. bonhotei with a confusible species in the Bahamas:


And Heraclides andraemon tailori is the Grand Cayman Swallowtail, found only on Grand Cayman Island. Charles B. Taylor, a Jamaican naturalist, visited Grand Cayman island in 1896 and identified this butterfly, and a bulfinch species, as being island specialties.

While the other subspecies of Heraclides andraemon could probably crossbreed if they chose, tailori looks as if mating with the other subspecies would be difficult for it. That's all this web site is going to say on the subject. You can find drawings of the tail segments if you look for them online.

People have wanted to believe that Heraclides andraemon was native to Florida and is in danger of being extirpated...


It was on the US endangered species list in the 1970s and 1980s. It was "delisted" due to lack of proof that it's ever been a US species. It may already have been extirpated as a full-time resident of Miami or the Keys. Scientists have confirmed its existence there only as an occasional visitor.

However, at least one visiting andraemon assumed that a massive project intended to help Schaus' Swallowtail populations rebound, in Florida, was for its benefit. (Both Schaus' Swallowtails and Cuban Swallowtails can live on the wild lime trees planted for the benefit of Schaus' Swallowtails.)


Despite evidence that Heraclides andraemon is no longer a native species in the US if it ever was one, that it may compete with endangered Schaus' Swallowtails, and that orange farmers would not like to see it become established in the US, apparently conservation grants are still available for anyone who can document having it in residence on property the person wants to dedicate to its conservation. Boondoggle? Maybe. Then again, when I see these grants advertised in Idaho, somehow I don't feel worried. These butterflies are very unlikely to become pests in Idaho.


Unlike some butterflies that have only one host plant, andraemon can live on several different plants in the citrus family. On Grand Cayman, tailori originally lived on a native tree called candlewood, before orange and grapefruit trees were brought in, and still can survive on candlewood and other uncultivated plants alone. It can also live on a large tree called the shake-hand tree. Not shake-hands, but shake-hand! This photo essay is about the tree but documents its continued use as a host by Heraclides andraemon:

In writing these articles I've been guided by Delano St Aubyn Lewis's e-book, Phylogeny and Revision of the Genus Heraclides; despite its technical-sounding title (and some technical vocabulary) this is a readable study of the next few weeks' featured butterflies. It does include those detailed studies of the tail ends, which scientists often use to identify species that otherwise look alike, and which this web site does not go into in detail. Butterfly of the Week: Ruby-Spotted Swallowtail

Arbitrarily I'm going to call an end to the genus Graphium, although we spent enough time there for scientists to propose reclassifying and renaming, meaning that there are valid Graphium species names we have yet to study. The article on Graphium wenlinga was frustrating to write and, no doubt, to read. In a few more years, as Asian scientists and naturalists publish more about the newly named species, it should be possible to write better articles about them.

The next genus in the Swallowtail group is Heraclides, "Sons of Heracles." Heracles was said to have been the strongest man in all Greek history. He was not described or portrayed as a giant, though he was usually drawn with massive muscles. The Heraclides aren't always the biggest Swallowtails in their range, but they run large; they include Florida's "Giant Swallowtail."

The first butterfly on the list is Heraclides anchisiades, the Ruby-Spotted Swallowtail. It is found from the southern tier of the United States to Chile. A fair bit of what's been published about it is written in Brazilian Portuguese. In the US it lives only in the southern point of Texas, but strays have been found as far north as Kansas and along our southern border.

Anchisiades means "son of Anchises." A few different characters in ancient literature were called Anchises. The best known character called Anchisiades was Aeneas, the Trojan warrior in the Iliad. Heraclides anchisiades is not very toxic to predators and looks very similar to Parides anchises, which is very toxic. Some scientists think Parides anchises, which moves slowly, also gains some benefit from resembling Heraclides anchisiades, which can lead birds a merry chase.



Basically a tropical butterfly, Heraclides anchisiades looks huge to North Americans, with wingspreads often over 4 inches and caterpillars often 3 inches long. It doesn't look much like the Giant Swallowtail but gets mistaken for it, anyway, because if it's not a swallowtail of giant size, what else could it be? It is also confused with India's "Mormon" swallowtails, some of whose color patterns it really does resemble, and with Hyalophora cecropia, which is just ridiculous.

This one's not so pretty but it does document how peaceable the caterpillars are. Subjected to all sorts of threatening, harassing behavior, most don't fight or flee, but freeze. One seems to be the designated osmeterium-waver for the family.


This family seems to have two osmeterium-wavers but most of the caterpillars will let themselves be picked off their perch in a solid sheet:


Papers have been published describing the parts of each section of its body, and its caterpillars. Google didn't do well translating this article into English, and the photos didn't show properly, but those of The Nephews who have tried to stay in touch with their grandmother's friends from Brazil may enjoy reading it in Portuguese.


It is fairly common in the places it frequents; sometimes its size, gregarious habits, and taste for ornamental shrubs and citrus trees, can make it a nuisance. 

Male Heraclides are often observed pollinating, but they spend some time composting. They are sometimes found at puddles and occasionally, as shown above, lick sweat off human skin or clothes. 

In South America Heraclides anchisiades is sometimes called Rosa de Luto, the Mourning Rose. Among North Americans who like fanciful names it has been called the Ruby Black Phoenix, or Ruby-Spotted Cattle Heart.  (Like a good composter, Heraclides anchisiades may be found among cattle, fanning its wings, sometimes into a position like a Valentine heart. Or some might see a resemblance between the shape of some individual's spots and the shape of an actual beef heart. Whatever.)

Currently five subspecies are recognized. Each has been given a few other names.

H.anchisiades anchisiades may or may not have a white spot in the middle of the forewing. The size and shape of the reddish spot on the hind wing may vary. Their hind wings show short tails or none. Females tend to have slightly larger wings with slightly larger spots than males, though the size ranges of wings and spots overlap. They are found across the wide northern section of South America.

They are not nearly so abundantly documented as the subspecies capys and idaeus.

H.a. capys are less likely to have a white spot in the middle of the forewing, and are found further south, southern Brazil to Argentina. The forewing pattern may be better described as solid black toward the body, with lighter, sometimes translucent, grayish or brownish black toward the tips, and sometimes a border of paler spots between the two sections.  (Capys was the name of one of Aeneas' friends, and also of his grandfather.)

Caterpillars have that humped back all Swallowtail caterpillars have, but may be more likely to stretch out their necks ahead of their humps and make the humps less conspicuous. Some Swallowtail caterpillars seem to curl down into their humps and present themselves to the world as cones. (And yes, if you could say to any Swallowtail caterpillar, "You're ugly!" would it say, "Thank you, I try," or "Thank You, Lord"? Caterpillars don't get any prizes for beauty.)

H.a. idaeus are found from the US to Colombia and Venezuela. They may have fewer, smaller, or no white spots on the forewings and more red spots on the hindwings. (In the Iliad, Idaeus was a messenger and mediator between the armies.)



Photo by Ag18, November, Mexico. The color is produced partly by the angle at which light hits the butterflies' wings; nevertheless, individuals can fade to brown and orange rather than black and red.


Photo by Harlin20, January, Honduras. Some photos of egg-laying females show black and pink colors, but in this case the female shows that tendency toward more faded, lower-contrast, browner coloring than the male. But it's only a tendency. She's not exactly hard to see.


Photo by Felipecastilla, October, Colombia. The female's abdominal section normally looks black, but shows rings of yellow underskin when she stretches to lay an egg. To predators, at this vulnerable moment she may look more like a wasp they don't want to eat.

Heraclides anchisiades are comparatively almost smooth, at least pebbly rather than branched, but there's a resemblance. Subspecies idaeus sometimes show a vestige of the girdle effect Parides, Battus, and Atrophaneura caterpillars share. 

H.a. lamasi are relatively little known. They are found from western Ecuador to northwestern Peru. (Lamas is the name of a place in Peru.)

H.a. philastrius are found on Trinidad island. The spot on the forewing may be yellow. (Philastrius was a fourth century author, the Bishop of Brescia; for a while he was remembered as a saint, but few remember him at all now.) INaturalist doesn't even have a page for them.


Museum specimen from ButterfliesOfAmerica. Scallops are consistently irregular, with the inner section of the hind wing being shorter so that the next section looks like a short "tail," as if these butterflies were trying to grow "tails" and not quite succeeding.

Adult butterflies are pollinators, especially attracted to flowers in the genera Hamelia, Igna, Ixora, Lantana, and Senecio

Eggs resemble round yellow beads. This is one Swallowtail species that seems to know the benefit of safety in numbers. Although the caterpillars eat their own eggshells and shed skins, they don't eat those of other caterpillars. Female butterflies are thus free to lay up to seventy eggs at a time, all on one leaf, and as the caterpillars hatch out, they line up side by side, touching one another, and munch munch munch until they burst. Though good for the survival of the caterpillars, this is not always good for their host plants. They can be very efficient feeders. 

Generally they rest during the heat of the day on a trunk or root, usually of their host plant, and eat at night. Litters may mix.

Clumps of full-sized caterpillars found on one tree have included over 100 individuals. Full-sized Heraclidd anchisiades caterpillars are the size of adult human fingers; these clumps look massive and can do as much damage as they look as if they would, though the trees recover. 

They're also quite good at the gross-out as survival strategy many large caterpillars use. There are subspecies variations; all tend to be yellowish and can manage to resemble both tiny snakes, and large unhealthy bird droppings, at the same time. Like all Swallowtail caterpillars, they have humped backs that conceal osmeteria, which in this species are  orange.

Individuals separate from the crowd to pupate; pupae are camouflaged as short thick broken twigs.

Although the caterpillars hatch and molt more or less in synchrony, with most of the litter maturing and pupating at the same time (sometimes a few are still side by side), they don't all emerge from the chrysalis at the same time. For no obvious reason some eclose in a few days, and others wait for months, one or two butterfly generations. Anyway, adults find mates, and the whole thing starts again...

As the timing of these photos shows, these tropical butterflies are active continuously throughout the year. The life cycle takes a few months. There are local generational cycles, but there are always anchisiades at every stage of life, somewhere. The life cycle of tropical plants takes place at a similarly furious pace. Caterpillars may seem to be killing a plant when they are actually pruning it back to a rate of growth that allows it to survive. 

Still, a phalanx of caterpillars who instinctively form part if they can't form all of a knothole shape, when they're on a plant you are trying to cultivate, can be an alarming sight. They may be part of the Creator's plan for the way tropical rain forests work. They are not part of the chemical agriculturists' plan for the way a factory farm should work. They can't possibly be good for immediate crop yields.

There is a Green strategy that actually benefits individual butterflies as well as farmers: stopping monocropping.

When it's easy for butterflies to overpopulate, never having to travel in search of the caterpillars' next meal or the butterflies' next host plant, they often do overpopulate. An unthinking appetite for dead skin keeps many large butterflies and moths from overpopulating--by producing inadvertent, and in some species it's not even always inadvertent, cannibalism. This control mechanism does not operate in Heraclides anchisiades. Siblings get some safety benefit from lining up side by side, so they stay in close-knit families, even merging with other families in heavily populated areas. 

So Nature rolls out a different control mechanism. Heraclides anchisiades are vulnerable to infestations by mites and fungi. There is, D. Lewis observed, abundant documentation of these parasites. This recent paper seems to have been first published online.


You can find individual butterflies that look "crusted" or "rusted" with layers of parasites covering large sections of their wings or bodies. From citrus farmers' point of view this may be a lovely sight to behold. Papers have been published about rearing the butterflies in laboratories to cultivate more virulent strains of parasites. 


Or just getting control of their population, thinning it down, in order to exploit the butterflies commercially. So many of the Asian Papilios, Parides, and Atrophaneuras that look similar are rare or endangered. Couldn't anchisiades wings be exported for use in making junk jewelry in Taiwan?

For the butterflies it means death, and probably discomfort that the butterflies can't do anything about. Individual butterflies are probably happier when their populations are sparse enough to keep parasitic infections down.

Humans can help by planting, instead of acres of solid citrus trees one after another, mixed orchards where trees planted next to each other don't host the same butterfly species. Keeping Heraclides populations sparse helps maintain a healthy distance among butterflies, reducing infections and also reducing the number of caterpillars feeding on any specific tree.
