One Science Fiction Convenience That I Wish Really Existed

This week's Long & Short Reviews prompt asked if there's an idea that works in science fiction that reviewers would like to be able to use in reality.

There is. It's interplanetary travel.

Somebody says, "Now that we've sold millions of computers to people who enjoy using the Internet, let's destroy all those computers, or at least their Internet connections, to force people to buy different ones that won't work so well and that will be dependent on huge, energy-sucking 'data centers' where people's data will be easy for hostile foreign powers to steal. Oh, and also this computer storage 'cloud' will use up so much electricity and water that there won't be enough for you. Also it will generate massive local warming. Also it will destroy the local ecology."

Zap! "The universe is wide," says a judge. "The desert planet RPG-47 orbiting the star Epsilon Cygni may have room for you. Off you go!" 

Somebody else says, "War! War! We want a war! We want the US to rescue Ukrainian socialism!"

Rap! "There's no room in the known universe for warmongers," says a judge. "So you get to explore the unknown universe. Your spaceship leaves for Andromeda in the morning. It's a big one; all the belligerents in Russia and Ukraine are on it too. You will be heavily sedated. Hopefully, those of you who wake up will form a new identity as Earthlings in Andromeda,  and you'll stop fighting and share an adventure with each other."

Somebody else says, "I want grandchildren! Lots and lots of grandchildren! Twenty would be a good round number. I don't need a lot of living space! They can all live in "tiny houses" in my back yard!"

Whap! "You and your children," says a judge, "can populate the depopulated planet Barkop orbiting the star Theta Siriae. Con suerte you can find out why it's depopulated and solve the problem..."

There would actually be men, and women and children, from Mars although they wouldn't be particularly little. Some of them might be green. They could choose their own color for their adaptive suits.

There would be planets for every kind and variety of bigot, where they would never have to worry about having to live or work with White people, Black people, males, females, Jews, Muslims, or whatever other group they found so hard to tolerate, ever again. They could worry about surviving instead. There are reasons why these planets were uninhabited. 

We'd find out whether there are any space aliens who are like us enough to be able to communicate. Most of them would of course be communicating JUST STAY OFF OUR PLANET but some of them might be interesting to know.

And all polluters and chemical sprayers would go directly to Pluto, where they'd find out, although it was no more a true scientific experiment than continuing to expose mice to glyphosate is, that the suits they'd been issued were meant to keep people warm in winter in a temperate zone on Earth. Pluto is colder. They would never be missed.
