Quote: "All around us the crackling shrieks of the Nimerigar
filled the cavern. Their evil laughter and display of
magic might not have scared the old man, but it was
certainly working on me."
This fantasy novel seems to be set in our world, but is it? Other worlds seem to overlap it in other dimensions. Some people have "extra senses" that can allow them to see the aliens among us. Humanoid aliens are usually seen as humans; dragons are seen as active volcanoes. When Reeve's friend Mari disappears, Reeve's quest to find her leads him to accept his destiny as a "soul wizard."
What's a "soul wizard," you might ask? Reeve does mention ancestors in Africa, but the phrase describes his practice of wizardry. At an age where people are normally swept over by emotions as sea cliffs are swept over by waves, Reeve's task is to develop control of his emotional energy, fine-tuning his sensitive feelings so as to project energy into his magic.
The anticipated conflicts between pro-human and anti-human aliens will put Reeve through his magical paces for the rest of the book. He'll learn early on that being a "soul wizard" is a lifelong vocation he'll be continuing to pursue, whether he's able to rescue Mari or not. Where is Mari, and why, and can Reeve help her, and if so can they live happily ever after? This book was written to lead to a sequel, or sequels.
If you like the idea of a late adolescent (college student) practicing emotional self-discipline with results that are out of this world, you will like Soul Wizard. The ratio of action to words is high; Reeve is a likable fellow, not obsessed with me-me-me-and-my-little-feelings even though he's working with his feelings. Though his magic is psychological, he practices and uses physical strength too, in a minimally destructive way. For fantasy fans the series meant to grow out of Soul Wizard should offer many hours of reading pleasure.
