Petfinder: What Have These Posts Done? Part I

All year this web site has featured Petfinder posts, sponsored by a reader, with pictures and links to the most photogenic adoptable pets in their towns. It's time to consider the returns on the sponsor's investment. How many of these animals have found homes?

"Possibly adopted" is not as good as "adopted," here. It means the shelter lost track of the animal. On a busy day it's possible that shelter staff failed to note an adoption, but it's unlikely. The animal might have been "fostered" first, before being officially adopted; shelter animals in "foster care" are supposed to be listed as still up for adoption, but shelter staff who really want to keep an animal have been known to lose that kind of information. Sometimes animals who've languished in one shelter for several months are sent to another shelter to see if, by any chance, the right human for them just happens to live in a different part of the country. Sometimes "possibly adopted" means the shelter staff don't want to admit how many animals die in shelters. This web site can't count "possibly adopted" as a loss, but neither can we count it as a win.

But it's not too late for some of these animals to find homes, so here's the tally of what's become of the most photogenic animals we found during the first half of 2022.

February:
Scarlett, hound dog: "Possibly adopted."
Cali, calico cat: "Possibly adopted."

March:
Sierra, Australian Shepherd dog: "Possibly adopted."
Trixie, ditto: "Possibly adopted."
Charlie, ditto: Still in the shelter. This web site waxed indignant about his $500 adoption fee. This web site is glad to see that the fee's been reduced to $305. You know the shelter has bought this dog a lot of food since March. You--somebody out there--know you want to spend mellow afternoons, next summer, grooming that fantastic fur with a fine-tooth comb. You can visit Charlie's web page at https://www.petfinder.com/dog/charlie-11681-54571652/ga/cumming/furkids-animal-rescue-and-shelters-ga170/ .

Betty White, calico cat: Adopted.
Auburn, calico cat: Adopted.
Papaya and Peaches, calico cats: "Possibly adopted."
Catherine and Julius, calico and orange cats, remain homeless. They're now described as adult cats and on the large side, having grown into the paws shown below. Catherine is said to twine her tail around Julius in a possessive, affectionate way. The blurry picture is still up front because it's actually a blurry video, but she has a half-dozen very appealing still photos at https://www.petfinder.com/cat/catherine-50593730/ga/smyrna/kudzu-cat-alliance-ga958/ .

April
Patches, calico cat: Adopted.
Auburn, calico cat: Adopted. (I didn't mean to pick the same cat as "most photogenic" in March and then again in April. She just was.)
Shiloh, calico cat: Adopted.
Lucy, still in the shelter at https://www.petfinder.com/cat/lucy-47205279/in/clarksville/purrfect-friends-for-adoption-inc-in368/. People don't want to have to give a geriatric diabetic cat medication?

Copper, beagle dog: "Possibly adopted."
Shelby, ditto: "Possibly adopted."
Bagel Bite, ditto: "Possibly adopted."
Tina, turtle: Adopted.
Nanticoke, turtle: Adopted.
Flash Gecko, lizard: Still up for adoption. The fee's down to $40. No matter how cute the Geico gecko is on television, geckos aren't ideal pets for everyone, but somebody out there ought to appreciate this one, who is described as "more interactive" than most lizards. Look at that little face! You know he's not going to try to sell you insurance. Surely this link would interest somebody you know in Wisconsin: https://www.petfinder.com/scales-fins-others/flash-51514482/wi/sheboygan-falls/larrs-lakeshore-avian-and-reptile-rescue-wi475/

Doodles, chicken: "Possibly adopted."
Ohio, duck: Adopted.
Sunshine and Cheeky, parakeets: Still up for adoption at https://www.petfinder.com/bird/cheeky-and-sunshine-48418433/ga/marietta/papayago-rescue-house-inc-ga858/. Parakeets can become great pets, though not all of them do. My father's all-time favorite pet was a parakeet who travelled with my parents throughout their nomad years, until they started anticipating me and re-homed the parakeet and the wife someone had chosen for him.

Suki, Alaskan Malamute dog: Adopted.
Raya, Alaskan Malamute dog: Still homeless in Pennsylvania. This web site has featured her, too, repeatedly because she is so photogenic. https://www.petfinder.com/dog/raya-54182839/pa/gettysburg/chesapeake-area-alaskan-malamute-protection-va127/.We have to give the shelter points for trying. They keep posting different pictures, and this is a dog who knows how to pose for great pictures, and by now someone's even posted a video. Sometimes people are just prejudiced against an older animal.

Razzmatazz, Alaskan Malamute dog: Adopted.
Bunny and Mouse, Manx cats: Adopted.
Rudder and Reece, Manx cats: "Possibly adopted."
Bunny #1 and Bunny #2, Manx kittens: This is painful to read: https://www.petfinder.com/cat/bunny-52373439/ga/watkinsville/magi-cat-adoption-network-piedmont-animal-clinic-ga314/. The shelter allowed someone to adopt Bunny #1, the viable kitten, and kept the blind one. They say that, though she's blind and walks with a limp, she still bounces about like a normal kitten. Of course, she's not; her bouncing will always need to be carefully supervised. Here's the blind Bunny as a year-old spayed cat who may or may not grow bigger:

May
Aria and Nilo, black and white cats: Still up for adoption at https://www.petfinder.com/cat/aria-54881529/ny/new-york/anjellicle-cats-rescue-ny488/ .

Bubbles, dark calico kitten: "Possibly adopted."
Lemon, pale calico kitten: Adopted.
Antonio, hound dog. Adopted.
Cheese Bro, beagle dog. Adopted.
Tickles, hound dog. "Possibly adopted."
Ava, hound dog. Adopted.

June
Ladybird, calico kitten. Adopted.
Zion, gray kitten. "Possibly adopted."
Mindy and Mork, kittens. "Possibly adopted."

Next week we'll look at what's become of animals featured here in August and September, and in the last Petfinder post this year we'll look at the ones featured in October and November.
