Length: 151 pages

Quote: “What itneglected to mentionw as the slip I’d made during a moment of exuberance on a television interview when I said, ‘Among other things I want to find out what happened to the Toomey brothers.’”

What happened to these characters in fictive history, writer Dan Sheridan soon learns, is that their descendants have become a criminal gang in the 1960s. Sheridan is soon a prisoner at their hideout in the desert where, among other things, he has to scale that sheer stone cliff depicted on the front cover to save himself and the young woman the gang are also holding prisoner. What’s been jammed into the old broken gun is revealed at the end of the book: when loaded for the last time by one of the original Toomey brothers, Sheridan reports, that gun “was really loaded.”
