Quote: "[S]he'd sworn off men, if not forever, at least for the next year."
But she's young and pretty, and although Sophie likes the idea of being a writer it doesn't seem to be her vocation. Her pheromone cloud attracts a hunk of compatible DNA before she's even unpacked in the rental place in Laguna where she's gone after taking the year off her job as an editor in San Diego. Torrid sex, narrated in enough detail that lovers of steamy romance will need to buy printed copies and lock them away from children, soon blows all thoughts of her book out of her head until a lovers' quarrel drives her back to her original plan for the year. A loyal friend wants to help sell her book, in the end, and may have enough clout to make it happen, but we see no evidence that Sophie even has a viable idea for a book in mind. Spending a year writing a book is her little code phrase for spending a year processing her feelings about the ex-fiance by whom she's just been jilted. Falling in love with a different young man is a lovely way to take revenge on Doug, though Sophie's new passion for Nick is just as much a matter of the flesh, not engaging the spirit, as her passion for Doug was a few years earlier.
I don't really endorse the message that flopping into bed before marriage is a way anyone reaches a Happy Ending, but Sophie's eagerness for the act of marriage may be something some women want to meditate on as a marital aid, so whatever.
