Some Favorite Things to Do in the Summer

Probably everyone's list boils down to the same thing: enjoy the weather...

1. Putter in the not-a-lawn and orchard. Cut, prune, and dig up "weeds"...and eat them! Many of our native "weeds" make good salads.

2. Unplug everything and read real books out in the sunshine.

3. Sell books.

4. Go to at least one Kingsport Fun Fest event, in July.

5. Go to Duffield Daze, the Saturday before Labor Day.

6. Eat fresh unsprayed fruits and vegetables.

7. Dig watercress out of the spring. Watercress tastes much better in winter. It keeps growing in summer, and has to be cleared out to keep the spring branch from getting muddy and to keep the property owners cool during the heat wave.

8. Watch at least one child play a sport; listen to at least one child perform some kind of music.

9. I've not done it lately, but one of my favorite things to do in summer is rent a kayak and spend the afternoon paddling.

10. And two more used to be tennis and square dancing, although, since age thirty, I've been too loyal to men with knee problems to enjoy either of those. (Is that a hint? Neither of those men is still alive.)

And another one used to be hiking and sports with The Nephews, although they're now old enough to do those things with people their own age. Never mind. Seniors find ways to get our exercise.

  1. I do like to walk in the summer, so long as it's early and still cool enough to not melt. We live in a very green area and it's nice to see the trees thriving.

    1. For any gardener who agrees not to spray, I'd be delighted to weed! (For a regular day's wages of course.) Where are you?

  3. Yes, Very much agreed summer is the best time to unplug or in my home turn off wifi just to focus on everything else.
