Classic Rock Helps Stroke Patient

Here's Paul Rance's story:

I've used singing/chanting for pain control as long as I can remember. (It works by exercising the diaphragm muscle; if you don't want to disturb other people's sleep, deep breathing works too.)

Toward the end of my husband's life, one day when both of us were worried about his being perceived as incompetent, I tried singing to pass the time...and we found that singing helped focus his mind and rally his strength. We used singing for these purposes several times after that. It seemed to entrain the activity in his brain, whether he had the physical energy to sing along or not.

The effects of music may be subtle and subjective, but they just might help a sick patient to recover...in some cases, even to avoid using medication.
