Web Log 6.12.23

Let's face it. Even when I spend time surfing and catching up on blogs, these days, I get more private, work-oriented e-mail and fewer newsletters than I once did. Nevertheless:

Christian

The Bible does make it clear that not everyone is called to take a vow of poverty...but here's the case for those who do feel so called. All Christians' attitude toward those who can live with less, whether as part of a permanent vow or just to get through lean years without sinking into debt or welfarism, should be respectful. So should our attitude toward those who can live in celibacy.

Civil Rights

Today's choice from howtomeowinyiddish.blogspot.com. There are certainly group wrongs still going on, though they're no longer legalized, but ultimately it does come to...

Fashion

The Illiberal Left were mean enough about this to push a button. I want one. Because of course the thing to do, when the self-anointed fashion police give someone a hard time about a perfectly legitimate piece of attire, is for all the people who really are cool to show up wearing something like it. Hmm. It's getting harder to wear any kind of jacket, every day. See the T-shirt below.

Humanity

When reading Shakespeare's famous line we have to consider its source. So many times--as in the American Civil War--history has shown that it really is "BLESSED is he who first cries 'Hold! Enough!'"

Memes

One to paste into messages to people who still use phones:

Music

Wu Fei wants to do for the Chinese guzheng what John McCutcheon did for the hammer dulcimer. There is some resemblance between the instruments, and there's some resemblance between the musicians' spontaneity and innovation. Check out Wu's improvised duet for guzheng and freight train:

She's done some for guzheng and banjo, guitar, etc., too. The guzheng is in the zither family but, given our current fad for specifying the size, range, and key of each musical instrument so music can be formally written and scored for groups, we may have to adopt "guzheng" into English if the instrument becomes popular.

Poetry

Teaching stories that rime:

Zazzle

Grill apron: mine:

Not mine:

My take on an Internet meme theme:

Not mine, but where there's a cute cat doormat there ought to be a cute dog doormat.

T-shirt line. I would like to see people get creative with this. In a nice way--with photos of their states, cities, counties, etc., as "Where Bigotry Goes to Die." You could specify some narrower kind of bigotry, but I like "bigotry" generally...because in practice the other kinds generally reduce to elitism.

Not mine, but a lovely thought:
