How to Make Your Own Rice Milk

Rice pasta isn't cheap. Neither is rice milk. If you buy rice pasta, however, Grandma Bonnie Peters offers this free tip for saving money on rice milk.

Notice how much of the starch cooks out of rice pasta? The water that drains off the pasta looks white, thick, almost milky. This is the base for rice milk. Cook it a little longer to reduce it if necessary (or use less water next time), then cool it, add sweetening and/or salt to taste, and use it just like commercial rice milk in cooking.

Rice milk is low-fat, so people who use it regularly don't need quite as much calcium as people who use cow's milk. If you want to supplement your diet with calcium, however, try mashing a calcium or calcium/magnesium/zinc tablet into enough carob powder to flavor your drink, then filling the cup with rice milk. Children actually like this.

  1. Carob powder is a good idea. And for calcium, sesame seed, seaweed and greens provide more than dairy milk.
