Book Review: Have You Heard the Cricket Song

Title: Have You Heard the Cricket Song

Author: Winston O. Abbott

Date: 1971

Publisher; Inspiration House

ISBN: 0-918114-02-0

Length: pages aren't numbered, but it's a thin book; fewer than 100 pages

Illustrations: line drawings by Bette Eaton Bowen

Quote: "I have seen ten thousand / migrant wings against the sky-- / but-- / yet to see one brush against / another as they fly--"

"This is not a book for everyone," the publisher warns on the jacket flap, but the publisher reprinted it every year; my 1980 copy is the "Ninth Printing.,"

I suspect that Bette Eaton Bowen's line drawings, which aren't far below field-guide quality, were more of a selling point than Winston O. Abbott's verse, but both appeal to True Greens. This team had collaborated on five previous short books of verse and pictures, all invoking the love of Nature. They were gifts for people who already had the complete works of Thoreau. If you like thinking about green space in the Northeastern States, you might want to collect the whole series.
