October comes in pretty, goes out plain.
Take time to drink in every shade of light.
Today's views never will be seen again.
A golden color cannot long remain
In living things. The leaves will fall tonight.
October comes in pretty, goes out plain.
It seems a waste, extravagant, and vain
To use daytime on what can wait til night.
Today's views never will be seen again.
These golden days prepare for wind and rain.
Fill p the cellar; caulk the windows tight.
October comes in pretty, goes out plain.
Prune roses, pull vines, fell dead trees, amain.
Drink nourishment from fading autumn light.
Today's views never will be seen again.
The duty to work out of doors is plain.
There'll be more hours for indoor wor each ight.
October comes in pretty, goes out plain.
Today's views never will be seen again.
What a lovely villanelle! Thank you for reminding me of the beauties of form, as well as making the tasks of autumn beautiful to read about too.
ReplyDeleteVillanelle perfection! October is the birth month of three of my four children. I look forward to it each year as lots of activity and celebration happens!!! Plus way too much cake.
ReplyDeleteOh that reminds me to drink in the beauty as it will pass Thanks, I needed that. Here we have spring with autumn weather :)
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me to make the most of daylight because soon it'll be full dark outside by 5:30.
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting, poets all! I look forward to reading your October poems soon, and probably linking some of them in this week's Web Logs.
ReplyDeleteA good reminder that we should appreciate our nows, since tomorrow is just around the corner and now will never be the same.
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of going from a belle to a wall-flower, so to speak!
