New Book Review: The Ghostly Gilded Egg

Title: The Ghostly Gilded Egg

Author: Tess McNeill

Date: 2023

Publisher: Tess McNeill

Quote: "I can see ghosts...that's what compelled my folks to retire early and move out here. Things can get weird when people find out you can communicate with the dead..."

Nora Nash, a fast-growing early adolescent who describes herself as gawky, is trying to keep her psychic ability a secret when she meets Lucille, the recently departed grandmother of her new friend Tyler. Lucille wants the kids to find a decorative egg that was stolen from her home when she died.

This mystery is so cozy and wholesome that readers might give it to the children. McNeill warns readers, though, that in the forthcoming volumes of the series, as Nora grows up, there will be murders as well as kidnappings and stolen objects for ghosts to help Nora solve. However, for those who want a series of detective stories with minimal violence, this may be the series youall have been looking for.

The Nash family will, in those forthcoming volumes, operate a bed-and-breakfast in a location that's never quite identified, somewhere in the United States. Nora and siblings will have jobs helping their parents. And none of them seems to spend time in the cell phone zone--which is definitely forward-thinking, if regrettable, because a child who roams around as widely as Nora does really needs a way to send emergency messages to her parents.
