Quote: "With a swift unyielding action, she plunged the dagger into Colin's back."

"She" is Meghan, Colin's twin sister. She's killed his unsuspecting pregnant sweetheart first, then killed him, with a magical knife given her by elders and allies who believe Colin and his girlfriend have a kind of magic power that always turns people toward evil. He does. She doesn't. However, his life is magically protected and he has the power to revive the girlfriend after both of them have been stabbed through the heart.

If you can stand that kind of drama, you'll like this book and the series to which it belongs. It's not for me. I think the author's decision to make volumes 4 and 5 of six the Book Funnel samples she hoped would attract people to the series was not good marketing; the way the book's written, with what feels like its climactic scene as chapter one, suggests that this may reflect a preference to start in the middle of things, but more than presentation, the series is up against the question of how many people really want to fantasize about killing their friends and family. I don't think very many readers will find that a satisfactory substitute for fantasies about the people who make the world worse for them and their friends and family.
