Tehee! But seriously...in Tennessee, what's calling itself the Green Party is locking horns with the Tea Party, filing a ludicrous lawsuit against the state for daring to demand that voters present photo ID.
Although this web site does not like to support the notion that photo ID proves any dang thing, this web site is also skeptical about the idea that asking for photo ID has anything to do with voter suppression. This web site will therefore propose that, instead of quibbling with the Greens, Tennessee Tea Parties take some practical steps to prevent voter suppression:
1. The Green Party spokesman who filed the suit claimed to be concerned about "minority" voters. The Tea Parties I know have tried to make sure the material they hand out and endorse Looks Like America, which is good. Not only do we want U.S. citizens from "minority" backgrounds to vote, we sometimes encourage them to vote for people from backgrounds similar to their own. The rubber hits the road when non-drivers who don't just stop at their polling place as they walk home from work want to go and vote. You know your neighborhood. How many car and van pools does your community need? Since some people don't like to be the only one in a group who looks the way they look, can you organize ethnically mixed car pools? Car pools should also Look Like America.
2. The Green Party spokesman also claimed to be concerned about students. There are two distinct problems with Tennessee students who don't vote in Tennessee elections.
(a) Some students don't have drivers' licenses, state identity cards, or the money to pay for either, because they are young and poor. If student labor programs pay them half the minimum hourly wage and transfer their wages directly to their tuition accounts, it's possible for students not to have ten dollars. These students will need state ID in order to get decent summer jobs and pay for any part of their education anyway, so it's a real public service to help them get these cards. Adults in Tennessee should use some time and money to help young Tennesseans become voters and taxpayers.
(b) Some other students at the state college closest to Gray, East Tennessee State University, don't have Tennessee ID's because they are not Tennesseans. Tennessee has a combination of accredited but not terribly tough state colleges, low in-state tuition, and easy in-state residency requirements that attracts many students who aren't even from contiguous states. These people can show Tennessee rent receipts, but have Virginia, North Carolina, or other state drivers' licenses, because they live and vote in other states when they're not taking classes at E.T.S.U. Their home states are within an hour's drive; they can go home to vote in between classes. They are precisely the demographic group voter ID laws are intended to prevent from voting more than once in the same election.
While these part-time Tennesseans are wary about mentioning to E.T.S.U. staff that they vote and own property in other states, they may be easier to identify in political groups or other off-campus activities. Their loyalty to the candidates or party of their choice is commendable. This loyalty can be put to legitimate use. Tea Parties in contiguous states might want to work out ways to ensure that students have other, legal things to do with their energy after voting once. Maybe the students would like to drive for car pools or host election day parties.
3. The Green Party spokesman also expressed concern about "elderly" voters. Presumably he meant voters with physical disabilities...he could hardly have meant 78-year-olds like Grandma Bonnie Peters, or 87-year-olds like Oogesti, who are still driving Republicans to the polls. In most states it's easy for anyone with confirmation of a permanent disability to get an absentee ballot by mail. I'm not sure why people whose disabilities are only temporary wouldn't have photo ID, but it might be a good idea for supporters of photo ID laws to find out more about how various kinds of disabilities affect the voters you know. Is photo ID a problem for any of your friends? What are their difficulties, and what can your Tea Party do to help?
4. Finally, the Green Party spokesman claimed that there are three counties in Tennessee that don't even have DMV headquarters. If this is true, which counties are those, and how do the people who live there get drivers' licenses? How can they help people who don't drive, but who would like to vote, to ensure that these counties are fairly represented in elections?

I think we need to be realistic: the need is to protect our personal information from the Internet--efforts to protect our personal information on the Internet work for maybe six months. But we definitely need people in our state and federal governments who appreciate the need for privacy.
So don't use that form to donate money to his campaign, unless you've gone to the trouble to set up a Paypal account in a corporate name and address different from your personal contact information. Instead, this web site recommends using cash to buy a U.S. postal money order--reliable, universally accepted, secure, and private. Buy a stamped envelope, address, seal, and mail it to:

I agree that it's presumptuous for a man to have much of an opinion on this topic, unless it might be "I like babies and would like to be the generous adoptive uncle of a baby who's at risk for an unnecessary abortion," and the more men who say that, the better. However, the system's not set up in such a way that a governor could impose his or her religious beliefs on the state without the consent of a majority, in any case. Thank God...and James Madison and Thomas Jefferson. And consider this thought:

Mr. Cantor has been on a tear lately trying to sell Republicans as the party that can make government work better for you. He’s opposed to defunding Obamacare. He’s actually the guy the bigs like.
I do have to say, what is more interesting here is that Marcus is also Bill Bollings’ consultant. Bolling thought he had a lock on the nomination and failed. So his consultant jumping ship to McAuliffe shouldn’t be a surprise. But the underlying issue here is how much the establishment is invested in the establishment — regardless of the party in charge.
Boyd Marcus tells the Associated Press, “he’s endorsing McAuliffe because he sees him as the candidate willing to work with both parties to get things done.”
Where by “get things done” he no doubt means can keep the big businesses of Virginia sufficiently loopholed out of the burdens the rest of Virginia must pay for with their taxes.

NO FAVORITES: Bill Bolling is staying neutral in the Virginia governor’s race.
“It was a grave violation of any kind of ethical standard to go out and hire someone from the other side who had access to immense amounts of sensitive information,” Marcus said at the time.
At least one Republican, a former client, wished Marcus well on Wednesday.
“Ultimately, Boyd has to do what he thinks is in the best interests of Virginia and we respect his decision. We know the McAuliffe campaign will benefit from his knowledge and experience,” Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling’s spokeswoman, Ibbie Hedrick, told Watchdog.
Hedrick said Bolling – a former contender for the GOP gubernatorial nomination – “has not made any endorsements in the statewide campaigns and he does not plan on making any endorsements.”
Since 2003, the political consulting firm of Marcus & Allen LLC earned a combined $182,000 from Bolling For Lieutenant Governor, Bolling For Governor and the Bolling Inaugural Committee.
The McAuliffe campaign has not divulged Marcus’ salary.

Ken Cuccinelli is leading an aggressive, populist, small government campaign. His latest television ad hits squarely on the theme of big companies hiring lobbyists and consultants in a bipartisan fashion and getting both sides to carve out loopholes and benefits for those big companies. The little guy is left paying for those loopholes in his taxes.
The consultants in the GOP, who’ve been profiting heavily from this sort of this, sell us “electable” candidates who cannot win against conservative candidates who will hurt their revenue stream. In that vein, we should look with interest that Boyd Marcus in Virginia is endorsing Terry McAuliffe. What is interesting is that Boyd Marcus is a consultant for Eric Cantor, the House Majority Leader.
Until the GOP starts purging its consultant class, it will keep having a hard time winning.

Candidate McAuliffe Under Investigation
Sorry, Democrats in Virginia, it wasn't just a rumor. The case against gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe seems to be substantial, according to the Washington Post. Here's their trailer piece:
"An electric-car company co-founded by Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe (D) is under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission over its conduct in soliciting foreign investors, according to law-enforcement documents and company officials.
The SEC subpoenaed documents in May from GreenTech Automotive and bank records from a sister company, Gulf Coast Funds Management of McLean. The investigation is focused, at least in part, on alleged claims that the company “guarantees returns” to the investors, according to government documents.
GreenTech has sought overseas investors through a federal program that allows foreigners to gain special visas if they contribute at least $500,000 to create U.S. jobs. Gulf Coast, which is run by Anthony Rodham, the brother of former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton, seeks investors for GreenTech and arranges the visas.

Citizenship and Immigration Services director to speed processing of 81 investor
applications in a federal “cash-for-visas” program after each invested at least
$500,000 in the hybrid car company.
The Inspector General’s Office says Mayorkas
is the subject of an investigation for allegedly helping Gulf Coast Funds
Management secure a visa for at least one GreenTech investor, according to the Assoicated Press. Mayorkas is
President Obama’s nominee for the No. 2 position in the Department of Homeland
Security.

that has been investigated by the House Intelligence Committee
over claims it has close ties with Chinese intelligence, NBC News reported. The GreenTech controversy is magnified because of its many political connections to the federal government. It’s owned by Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe, who announced his resignation as company chairman in April amidst an intense investigation by Watchdog. and Gulf Coast are related, sharing the same McLean, Va., address through
February 2013.
“Until questions regarding the plant are
answered and a complete financing solution is identified, we recommend that the
Governor decline the opportunity to support the expansion into Virginia of the
Gulf Coast Funds Management LLC Regional Center affiliated with GTA,” Anderson
wrote in 2009.
Virginia government officials finally nixed the idea of a plant there. McAuliffe
ultimately located the plant in Mississippi and has yet to construct the
building that he says will be its permanent facility.

He has traveled all over the coal-rich state of Virginia, cheering on President Obama's job-killing "War on Coal."
And he has threatened to back out of the one debate that has been scheduled between him and Ken Cuccinelli because he'd rather sit back and take cheap shots at this tried-and-true conservative.
Conservative StrikeForce is prepared to launch a flight of radio ads, a targeted online ad campaign, and informational websites to alert Virginia voters to this important election.
But we need your help to make it happen.

Candidate McAuliffe and the Right to Work

Our “inalienable rights” cover a lot of territory including the right to work, the right to negotiate and the right to collectively bargain. No one can find fault with collective bargaining provided that the employer and employee can negotiate and procure outside of the organization (should they choose) and do so free from intimidation. But when “collective bargaining” evolves into using the power of the state to bully the rest of us, the results will be (and have been) universally…bad. And last, for both campaigns, (striking the first two for obvious reasons), American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees becomes his top contributor at $726,239 while 3 of the top 5 contributors are, or represent, organized labor totaling $1.25 million

To be fair and to assess the impact of organized labor on a Terry McAuliffe administration, we must consider his relationship with organized labor since at least 2008 when he began his unsuccessful bid for Governor in the 2009 election. Because of his longstanding relationship with organized labor, we can certainly consider his $250,000 contribution to the benefit of organized labor bringing the total to about $1.71 million.

Your Right to Work Rights – In Three Minutes
From The National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, established in 1968, is a nonprofit, charitable organization. Its mission is to eliminate coercive union power and compulsory unionism abuses through strategic litigation, public information, and education programs. But in many states, an employee can be forced to pay certain union dues or be fired from his or her job.
- Union members have the right to resign from formal membership at any time. However, dues deduction authorizations may limit when they can be revoked.
- Employees covered by state Right to Work laws can not lawfully be required to pay any union fees to keep their jobs. But state Right to Work laws do not protect railway and airline employees and employees of private-sector contractors on some federal properties.
- Because they enjoy the special privilege of exclusive representation, unions have a legal duty to represent fairly all employees in their bargaining units. Unions are legally required to represent nonmember employees the same as members, but unfortunately this duty is often breached.
- If a law or bargaining agreement permits it, employees can be forced to pay certain union fees. If you don’t join the union, or resign from membership, and notify the union that you don’t want to pay full dues, the required fee must be limited to the union's proven costs of collective bargaining activities. This fee may not lawfully include things like political expenses.
- Nonmembers with religious objections to supporting a union have the right to ask the union to redirect the forced dues amount to charity. Religious objectors do not have to belong to a specific church to claim this right.
- A union member who wants to work during a strike should resign from union membership BEFORE going to work. If the resignation is mailed, the employee should not work until the day after the resignation is postmarked. Otherwise, the employee could be fined by the union. If you are already a nonmember, you can work at will during a strike and not be lawfully fined.
- Many employees have a legal right to petition for an election to oust an unwanted union from their workplace or to eliminate the union’s ability to collect forced fees. You should contact us if you want to do this.
- Your best source for information about your Right to Work rights is this web site. Foundation attorneys have represented many employees like you, and have taken several cases all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to protect workers’ rights.
