Cities Sell Stores for One Dollar: HB726

If enacted, Virginia House Bill #726 would allow the city of Newport News, as well as Richmond, to grab "blighted properties" (other than homes in which people are living) and resell them for a dollar.

Sounds like a great business opportunity for residents of these cities...but seriously, when business owners have been hit by "The Recession," demanding that they meet someone else's building maintenance standards (a busybody's? The United Nations'?) or have their property seized and sold for a dollar is hardly likely to improve the local economy.

If local people are the ones complaining about the "blighted properties," local government needs to stand up to the busybodies. A good response to a complaint about a neighbor's "blighted property" might begin with "If it looks so bad to you, what have you offered to do to help your neighbor fix it?"
