Quote: "There you go, Dotty. Why don't you become a gardener?"
Dotty has no noticeable talent for gardening or for anything else. She's only a little ditzier than her two best friends; in their late twenties, they all seem to be living on their parents' money, spending whatever they earn on drinks and junkfood, and the one who has a job is a bartender.
Dotty is, however, restless during the days when all the other adults are working, so she starts marketing herself as a lawnmowing sevice. This allows her to talk to lots of strangers, which as an extrovert she enjoys doing. On her very first job, she has to do a bit of digging. After displaying terribly cute revulsion at fertilizer and fear of worms, Dotty's next shovel stroke makes her friends scream too. It's a bone--small, but human! Soon they're "digging" for the records of the nearby hospital...
This short novel was written to introduce Dotty and her friends before full-length novels about their amateur detective work come onto the market. It's a cozy mystery; no evidence of any outright murders. And, of course, the detectives' ditziness is always good for a laugh, although what they dig up is a a sad story.
