(The Booktober Blitz delivered books about the New Year holiday too. I didn't get to them in time for those reviews to appear in their proper sequence, so this is the book review that should have gone live for the third of January.)
Title: Sign of the Symean
Author: R.A Lindo
Date: 2018
Publisher: Periums
Quote: "[T]he adults were on edge and the little Kaira could pick up from their conversation suggested something was wrong."
If Harry Potter's world didn't have Hogwarts and the other prep schools for wizards, but instead consolidated magic power and wizards around museums, the Society for the Preservation of Magical Artefacts is what they'd have. Kaira's father and aunt belong to the Society; she and her friends try to help. After some time learning what the Artefacts are like, during which Kaira embarks on a misguided but brave and successful quest all by herself, she's ready for her first officially sanctioned quest, which will take place in the next volume of the series. There are more than a dozen full-length books in this series.
It's an interesting premise. I was bemused by the object called a Quij, which can either be a helpful tool for returning objects to their proper places, or a swarm of biting inects. I kept trying to imagine it being both.
Urban fantasy fans are likely to enjoy this book--and its series.
