Book Review: Baby-Led Weaning Cookbook

Title: Baby-Led Weaning Cookbook 2023

Author: Olivia Graham

Date: 2023

Quote: "Baby-Led Weaning...[is] about letting babies...[decide] what they eat, how they eat it, and even how they play with it."

Or, cook a baby-sized portion of a gourmet dish for the adults, and allow the mostly breast-fed baby to eat as much as Baby will. The thinking is that Baby will be motivated by flavor and variety to get more calories from "healthy" semi-solid food than from milk as Baby acquires teeth.

How well can this be expected to work? Babies have been making the transition to more solid food as they have acquired teeth for a long time. The only real change facing today's babies is the difficulty of obtaining clean, healthy solid food. Chemical spray residues and GMO are hard to avoid.

Meanwhile, here is a terribly cute and cheerful little recipe book written in terms that invite preschool-aged siblings to participate in integrating cooking time into nursery tale time. Things might be cooked over low heat, or "a gentle dragon's flame." A medium ("cute") sweetpotato is steamed or baked until the cubes are "soft and ready for a cuddle."

If adults who are not full of prolactin can endure this kind of thing, their reward will be some simply delicious food. The adults' sweetpotatoes don't have to be pureed; their chicken, carrot, and potato can be seasoned with salt and pepper. Tacos, kabobs, and even a simple currylike dish await.
