Book Review: The Other Daughter

Title: The Other Daughter

Author: Peter Martin

Publisher: Amazon

Quote: "Someone was singing and playing a guitar. And what a voice!"

Maggie Jackson, who feels moved by the girl's voice, has only just buried her daughter Felicity, who was killed instantly in a traffic accident. Kate Devlin, the streetcorner singer, was named after and reportedly sings like "a young" Kate Bush. Maggie likes music, but not madly enough to explain her motherly attraction to the homeless Kate.

Dan and Maggie offer Kate a home and a day job until her singing career takes off. There is some suspense in wondering how, when, and whether Frank will be demolished. There's more in wondering whether Kate will know for sure who her biological father is. Generally this is a best-case, pro-adoption story.

I could have done without the scene where Maggie, who is motherly and kind but not intelligent, confiscates Kate's knife, oozing bourgie sentimentalities about there being no need for weapons if we just stick tight to other people--which the plot proceeds to demonstrate is false. Apart from that, adoption stories feel good and this is a feel-good read.
