Can Carbon Dioxide Be Turned to Stone?

It sounds like science fiction, but it's science: in Iceland, Real Scientists are working on a method to "capture and store" carbon dioxide by isolating the gas and injecting it into basalt.

If it could happen anywhere, it would probably have to happen in a strange, implausible-sounding, fairy-tale-like country...well, actually, as some place names in Iceland document, the people who first settled Iceland thought it was more of a horror-story-like country. An arctic island that's livable because ongoing volcanic activity warms the land and water? A country that recently declared bankruptcy, as the scene of a scientific breakthrough? I've always found it hard to believe, and fascinating, that Iceland exists at all.
