Book Review for 7.5.24: Braving Stars

Title: Braving /Stars

Author: Amy Michelle Carpenter

Date: 2020

Quote: "There was only one step between me and my wildest dreams."

In this series of short stories we meet some of the people from the other planets that keep a friendly eye on the "younger" civilization of Earth, and the humans who see and interact with them. The aliens who've been preparing to spend time on Earth look almost like humans, but with orange skin tones and long flexible noses, so...odd-looking, freakish humans.

It's unreasonable to expect a recommendation of a book based on only "sample stories"; writers who want good reviews, or star ratings, need to send out complete review copies. We're told that there will be a sweet, idealistic, age-appropriate relationship between an alien girl and a human boy. What I received tells me nothing about what Carpenter considers age-appropriate. I'd guess that, at the age the characters are, they converse and tell people they're friends, but I don't know that. Some writers think it's appropriate to put detailed information about where babies come from into books marketed to children.

Anyway, if the premise of alien observers of human civilization passing unnoticed on Earth appeals to you, this collection probably will too. I think Zenna Henderson did it better, though.
