Adams seeks 16th House seat

Chatham attorney Les Adams announced last week he will seek the Republican nomination for the 16th District seat in Virginia’s House of Delegates.A former prosecutor, Adams was urged to throw his hat in the political ring after Del. Don Merricks decided not to seek a fourth two-year term in November. The 16th District includes most of Pittsylvania County, including the Hurt area, a large part of Henry County and the city of Martinsville.
Adams, 38, is a partner in the law firm of Adams, Elmore and Fisk, PLC, on Main Street in Chatham.
“When I was asked to pursue the Republican nomination for delegate, I was humbled by the request,” Adams said. “After intense consideration and prayer and with the support of my wife and family, I have decided to answer the call to this service.”
A Pittsylvania County native, Adams is the first candidate to formally announce for the 16th District race.
A “consistent conservative,” Adams wants to follow in Merricks’ footsteps as a champion for Southside.
“I deeply respect the service to our district provided by Del. Don Merricks, who has demonstrated authentic leadership with a spirit of humility rarely seen,” Adams said. “It would be an honor for me to continue that tradition of principled, conservative leadership that reflects the values and concerns of our people.”
Adams has a bachelor’s degree from Liberty University and earned his law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law in 1999.
After law school, Adams was a law clerk in Danville Circuit Court for Judge Joseph Milam and the late Judge James Ingram.
He joined the Pittsylvania County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office in 2002, prosecuting murder, drugs and burglary cases.
From 2001-06, he served as adjunct professor at Danville Community College, teaching classes on legal research and writing, domestic relations, and criminal law and procedure.
Adams also worked as an adjunct professor at the Helms School of Government at Liberty University from 2006-11.
He has also served as a faculty member at the National Advocacy Center in Columbia, S.C., for the training of new prosecutors through the National District Attorneys Association.
In 2011, Adams joined Yeatts, Overbey and Ramsey, PLC, the predecessor firm to Adams, Elmore and Fisk, PLC.
Adams focuses on criminal and civil litigation and family law.
Along with law partner Tim Fisk, Adams serves as Chatham’s town attorney.
Adams served two terms as president of the Pittsylvania County Bar Association.
From 2009-11, he served as circuit representative for the Young Lawyers Conference of the Virginia State Bar.
Adams was a member of the Faith Christian Academy Board of Directors for three years.
A Chatham Rotary Club member, Adams serves as a member of the President’s Council of the local Good News Jail and Prison Ministry.
Adams lives in Chatham with his wife, Melanie, a part-time pharmacist at Martinsville Family Pharmacy, and 7-year-old son, Roger. The family attends Chatham Baptist Church, where Adams serves as deacon.
